Amici di HIVE, in questo post vi parlo di Yan Pei-Ming, un pittore cinese naturalizzato francese. Nato a Shanghai nel 1960, all’età di vent’anni si trasferisce in Francia, a Digione, nella Borgogna, dove studia all'École des Beaux-Arts e dove vive e lavora.
Perfeziona i suoi studia Roma, vincendo un concorso nel 1993-1994, per entrare all’Accademia di Francia a Villa Medici. A Roma vi ritornerà ventitré anni dopo, non più da studente ma da affermato artista internazionale, con una mostra a lui dedicata: “Yan Pei-Ming Roma a Villa Medici”. Nel 2023, a Firenze le sale di Palazzo Strozzi hanno ospitato la mostra "Yan Pei-Ming. Pittore di storie", un’ampia retrospettiva dell'artista in Italia.
Perché vi parlo di Yan Pei-Ming? Perché è un artista singolare. La sua arte è un connubio tra la formazione artistica cinese e la cultura classica del mondo occidentale.
È un artista decisamente figurativo che si esprime attraverso una pittura monocromatica, privilegiando il bianco, il nero e il rosso.
Nel suo atelier, ottenuto dalla trasformazione di un vecchio magazzino industriale, realizza opere dalle dimensioni monumentali, aiutandosi con scale, impalcature e piattaforme aeree. Non utilizza disegni preparatori, lavora direttamente con i pennelli sulla tela e, che pennelli! Quelli che usa sono particolari, impiegati prevalentemente dai pittori edili: sono pennelli piatti, dal manico lungo e delle dimensioni variabili che, per intenderci, hanno le sembianze di una scopa da cucina; solo nei ritocchi utilizza pennelli tradizionali da pittore.

Vedendolo all’opera, nei filmati che si riesce a visionare su You Tube, Yan Pei-Ming ingaggia con la tela un serrato corpo a corpo altamente emozionale. Il colore, arriva in grande quantità, con pennellate vigorose, sotto le quali le tela soccombe all’impeto. Inizia riversando sulla superficie bianca colore molto diluito, che distribuisce, con la pennellessa da imbianchino edile, senza un’apparenza logica, in un continuo movimento che espande in ogni direzione, fino ad arrivare a dare una intensa visione emozionale. Su questo fondo, inizia poi a sviluppare l’idea pittorica.

È un pittore figurativo che racconta la realtà immergendosi nel passato e nell’attualità, e lo fa, attraverso l’interpretazione di immagini fotografiche, a centinaia sparse su uno dei suoi tavoli da lavoro. I soggetti da cui trae ispirazione ci parlano del suo vissuto e della cultura orientale, per un verso e, per l’altro, dalla cultura dell’occidente. Ecco allora, le grandi tele dedicate al Grande timoniere Mao Zedong, a Bruce Lee o Buddha, ma anche i ritratti realizzati alla madre, al padre, ai suoi famigliari; ritrae più volte anche la tigre e il drago, che nel Taoismo rappresentano le forze cosmiche dell’equilibrio e dell’armonia; e poi i suoi autoritratti, tanti, nelle diverse pose, come un viaggio interiore intrapreso per esplorarsi e capirsi, ed avere maggiore consapevolezza di sé.
Studia e si confronta con i grandi classici del passato dell’occidente, ma non è una semplice riproduzione di opere importanti nella storia dell’arte, bensì le reinterpreta, con la sua sensibilità e l’uso monocromatico del colore, come ad accentuare la drammaticità della scena. È il caso della "La morte di Marat"di Jacques-Louis David o la "Fucilazione "di Goya.

Dalle foto riprende le immagini della cronaca di eventi drammatici del nostro tempo, si guardino le tele dedicate a Hitler, Mussolini o alle morti tragiche di Pasolini e Moro, all’attentato a Giovanni Paolo II e, attraverso la sua visione del mondo, ce le ripropone in una essenzialità figurativa ancora più drammatiche, come se stesse lanciando un grido di dolore per lo smarrimento della condizione umana nella società contemporanea.

Friends of HIVE, in this post I will talk about Yan Pei-Ming, a Chinese painter who became a naturalized French citizen. Born in Shanghai in 1960, at the age of twenty, he moved to France, to Dijon in Burgundy, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and where he currently lives and works.
He refined his studies in Rome, winning a competition in 1993-1994 to enter the French Academy at Villa Medici. He returned to Rome twenty-three years later, no longer as a student but as an established international artist, with a dedicated exhibition: “Yan Pei-Ming Roma at Villa Medici”. In 2023, the halls of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence hosted the exhibition "Yan Pei-Ming. Painter of Stories", a major retrospective of the artist in Italy.
Why am I talking about Yan Pei-Ming? Because he is a unique artist. His art is a fusion of Chinese artistic training and the classical culture of the Western world.
He is a decidedly figurative artist who expresses himself through monochromatic painting, favoring white, black, and red.
In his studio, converted from an old industrial warehouse, he creates monumental works, using ladders, scaffolding, and aerial platforms. He does not use preparatory sketches; he works directly with brushes on the canvas, and what brushes! The ones he uses are unusual, mainly employed by house painters: flat brushes with long handles and varying sizes, resembling a kitchen broom. He only uses traditional painter’s brushes for final touches.

Watching him work, in videos available on YouTube, Yan Pei-Ming engages in an intense and highly emotional physical confrontation with the canvas. The paint arrives in large quantities, with vigorous brushstrokes, under which the canvas succumbs to the impact. He begins by pouring very diluted paint onto the white surface, distributing it with a house painter’s brush without an apparent logic, in continuous movements expanding in every direction, ultimately achieving an intense emotional vision. On this background, he then starts developing his pictorial idea.

He is a figurative painter who tells reality by immersing himself in both the past and the present. He does so by interpreting photographic images, hundreds of them scattered across one of his work tables. The subjects that inspire him speak of his personal experiences and Eastern culture on one hand, and Western culture on the other. This is why we see his large canvases dedicated to the Great Helmsman Mao Zedong, Bruce Lee, or Buddha, but also portraits of his mother, father, and family members. He often paints the tiger and the dragon, which in Taoism represent cosmic forces of balance and harmony. Then there are his numerous self-portraits in different poses, like an introspective journey to explore and understand himself, gaining greater self-awareness.

He studies and engages with the great classical masters of the past in the West, but he does not merely reproduce famous works of art history; rather, he reinterprets them with his sensitivity and monochromatic use of color, as if to accentuate the dramatic intensity of the scene. This is the case with "The Death of Marat" by Jacques-Louis David or "The Execution" by Goya.

From photographs, he captures images of dramatic events from our time. Consider his canvases dedicated to Hitler, Mussolini, or the tragic deaths of Pasolini and Moro, or the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. Through his vision of the world, he presents them to us in a stark figurative essence that is even more dramatic, as if he were expressing a cry of pain for the loss of human condition in contemporary society.
