There is alwsys something special about Indian markets. The actual market life for shoppers lies in the open market situated along the streets or paveways. Which spread across the differrnt locality. In Delhi we have some very popular marketing hub like lajpat nagar, chandni chowk etc where one can buy all kind of garments and accessories at a reasonable price. Likewise, every city have their own junction for the shopaholic. These markets alwsys present a very unique glimpse of vibrant India. Infact such markets are not limited to clothing but we have all kind of products easily available openly. Even the fish 🐟 .
Unlike last time, when I visited to buy the eggs, this time around I went to get some fresh water fish. The Indian fish market differs from those in many foreign countries primarily due to a higher proportion of small-scale, local fish producers. The market is very busy during the day time, and the fish vendors kept their items on display along the road side. There were many vendors, and you need to smart enough to understand which one is selling the right item. Infact it is all about getting a good bargain in the market.
After roaming for sometime, I get into a good deal for 2KG of fish from this vendor. Who kept some variety on display. But I was looking for Rohu fish. A big fresh water fish does not have much bones or can quickly been removed while eating. The vendor kept a drum nearby and showed me some big fish.
These big drums keeps the alive fishes. It was well connected with motor for spraying water continously to provide necessary oxygen to the fish. To identify if it is alive or not, you can see the fish moving mouth. I got a big one and asked the vendor to preen, clean and cut into pieces.
These vendors do provide all the servies in the buying cost. Indian does not favor eating packaged fish item, when we have all the option available with the fish vendor. Soon the vendor started running the fish body with a nailed brush to remove the outer skin
The vendor seems to have a good business since morning. The piece of utensil where he removed the skin's was compltelly filled.
Once he done with the cleaning, the vendor removed the side wings from a big blade, that was kept in front of him. The big iron blade is very sharp object, which were attached to a wooden plank that was kept under his foot.
He was working like a pro. While working on my fish, he was also entertaining other customers who were trying to get a better deal with the prices. While dealing he mastered his hands to cut the fishes into small pieces. He used the same big blade to cut the fish.
In between all this he cleaned up the stomach portion and remove all the unwanted items from fishes body. A quick services is what makes the vendor free and focus on other customer. He quickly wrapped my fishes pieces into poly bags and ask for payment. I paid and went to home for some crispy fish fry.
Many Indians like to have a fried fish and while many like to cook them in curries. I love munching crispy fried fishes. I fried them in oil after mixing with turmeric and salt. It was a delicious snacks for us.
Indian fish markets have a lively atmosphere because they offer an authentic glimpse into local traditions. While one get a variety ofnoption, the open set up along the road saves from the unwanted smells. A great experince of buying fish after long time.
In good faith - Peace!
