Flashback Rehearsal Bass Player For 70s Horn Band

in Discovery-it18 days ago (edited)

Flashback: Happy November 4th! Today, I helped a “70’s Horn Band” rehearse.

This would be the type of band that has fewer players than the big band jazz groups that you normally hear me in. You’re probably already familiar with more of these groups. Groups from the 70s like, Tower of Power, Chicago, Steely Dan… kinda like jazz funk… demanding bass player music.

Preparing amplifier

Who enjoys schlepping their gear? I don’t. It’s a waste of dexterity and focus. It’s unnecessary wear and tear on the tools I we to strive for professionalism on our instruments. Imagine, every time you go to work, you need to bring your own coffee machine, elevator buttons, office, lights, desk, chair, computer screen, backup, servers, desk, partition, meeting supplies… you gotta bring all that stuff and then fuel fresh enough for profitability. 😅 It’s dumb. 😐 i’m sure I’ve ranted about this before. Thanks for reading.

My fingertips still hurt from the concert on Friday. I remember this feeling from my full-time past. It goes away.

Record Rehearsals

This is advice to all musicians. Record everything. Record it in the simplest way. It should be easy to listen again later. Don’t get wrapped up in editing or the production of your recording. Don’t expect to share it.
The point\healthy part is to quickly and easily listen back and evaluate at your leisure.

Songs To Learn

I like musical “homework.” I started off by fishing out all of the Tower Of Power tunes they had in their song book. I figured it behooves me to learn and know these songs for the rest of my life.

They sent me a Setlist from the previous gig. It’s a good start, but songs are missing. Where the hell is “Soul Vaccination?

I guess they’re not doing all of the Tower Of Power tunes they have in their library. I’m probably going to ask why they don’t include it. I realize its sounds a lot like What Is Hip, but that just means separate the songs within the set.

I created a yt playlist containing many of the songs we are probably performing in 2025.

I’m The New Bass Player

Rehearsal seemed great. Neighbors were not annoyed.
Band leader said keep the bass book. I said, “what about the next guy?” He said, I’m the new bass player.
I’m glad to have the bass book to take home.
