"Guédelon Castle 2022"

"Since 1997, they're building a full-fledged castle in the dense forest of the Puisaye, using only medieval techniques and tools! It's an archeological experiment, and about 300,000 tourists annually are flocking to the construction site to watch them do it. The castle is projected to be finished next year, and by the looks of it, that seems realistic. Guédelon can be visited March through November."
That's what I wrote in May when I last visited Guédelon, and I finally got around to paint at least one scene from the experience. I just love the way the laburnum hedge makes this entrance to the castle court look so natural, although it doesn't belong here at all. Obviously, a huge breach in the wall with a convenient bridge over the moat would make a real castle pretty much indefensible and hence pointless!
So why did they do it? As we can see from the air, the Guédelon builders even made this access bridge extra wide and strong compared to the actual castle gate. The crowd in the courtyard gives us a clue: the breach must be a concession to modern safety standards; it's a way for emergency vehicles into the castle as they most certainly wouldn't make it through the castle gate.
BTW, they also covered the big tower with a modernish looking temporary roof, presumably to be replaced with clay tiles soon. That ugly grey contraption I left out of my painting entirely, so the scaffolding on the tower looks more medieval like it did a few years ago.

"Seit 1997 wird im dichten Wald der Puisaye eine vollwertige Burg gebaut, und zwar ausschließlich mit mittelalterlichen Techniken und Werkzeugen! Es handelt sich um ein archäologisches Experiment, zu dem jährlich etwa 300.000 Touristen auf die Baustelle pilgern, um dabei zuzusehen. Die Burg soll im nächsten Jahr fertiggestellt werden, und so wie es aussieht, scheint das auch realistisch zu sein. Guédelon kann von März bis November besucht werden."
Das habe ich im Mai geschrieben, als ich das letzte Mal in Guédelon war, und ich bin nun endlich dazu gekommen, wenigstens eine Szene von diesem Erlebnis zu malen. Es gefällt mir außerordentlich, wie die Goldregenhecke diesen Eingang zum Schlosshof so natürlich aussehen lässt, obwohl der hier überhaupt nicht hingehört. Ein riesiger Durchbruch in der Mauer mit einer bequemen Brücke über den Graben würde eine echte Burg natürlich extrem angreifbar und damit sinnlos machen!
Warum also hat man das gemacht? Wie wir aus der Luft sehen können, haben die Erbauer von Guédelon diese Zugangsbrücke im Vergleich zum eigentlichen Burgtor sogar besonders breit und stark ausgeführt. Die Menschenmenge im Innenhof gibt uns einen Hinweis: Der Durchbruch muss ein Zugeständnis an moderne Sicherheitsstandards sein; er ist ein Weg für Rettungsfahrzeuge in die Burg, die es mit Sicherheit nicht durch das Burgtor schaffen würden.
Übrigens war heuer der große Turm mit einem modern aussehenden provisorischen Dach bedeckt, das vermutlich bald durch Tonziegel ersetzt werden wird. Diese hässliche graue Abdeckung habe ich in meinem Bild ganz weggelassen, so dass das Gerüst auf dem Turm wieder mittelalterlich aussieht, wie es vor ein paar Jahren auch war.
