NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) has been the ultimate end goal of most Nigerian students in tertiary institution. The joy of wearing the NYSC uniform is something that embodies pride and achievement, it also symbolises that one has truly graduated from a tertiary institution.
Although, the allowance the federal government is providing for graduates undergoing this program is not encouraging considering the hardship in the country but yet each and every university graduate is fighting to undergo this programme. I call it fighting because the process is what i describe as "Survival of the Fittest". It is worth noting that without an NYSC certificate, the tertiary institution certificate is of lesser use. Now you know why everyone fighting for it.
Five days ago, on 2nd January 2025, at exactly 12:45 p.m., NYSC posted a memo on their X account, disclosing the date for the commencement of registration. I was very happy about this because I have been waiting for it. My friends and uncles have been looking forward to seeing me go for services, they often express concern, asking me what is causing the delay.
Just as i heard in the past from my relatives, friends and colleagues who have undergone NYSC registration about the ugly experiences they had, i had to prepare myself mentally and otherwise for any challenges that might arise. However, the disclosed date wasn't quite favourable for me as it falls on a Monday, a day of sit-at-home in the southeast.
I went to bed early and woke up around 6 a.m. First thing i did was to check the NYSC portal to see if it has open for registration but nop. I had to brush my teeth and take a shower but lo and behold, after brushing my teeth, i checked their site again, and it was open for registration. I quickly postponed bathing and started creating profile (before their sever would start experiencing traffic). Finally, i was able to create my profile with ease. The next step involved thumbprinting and passport capturing. At this point, i had to go to an accredited cyber cafe for NYSC.
This is when i felt the impact of sit-at-home. There were no commercial vehicles or bikes on the road, so I had to beg my dad to take me there in his vehicle. Luckily, we arrived on time when there were not many people.
At that moment, the website had started experiencing traffic. Proceeding with fingerprinting and capturing seemed like a struggle. After several trials, it went successful. Onto the next stage, which involved filling out documents containing personal information, educational background, and selection choices. This was the stage when the website server became critically bad, nothing was going through anymore, and i spent the whole day not achieving anything.
I came back home in the evening on foot, exhausted, but didn't give up. I kept trying, fearing that the portal might close at any time. Of course, it did close three times during the night and reopened but by then, i was able to finish what was left to do. Early this morning, i had to return to the cyber cafe to make payment as that's the last step.
I am really happy and relieved that, finally, after the stress and frustration, i succeeded.
