Yesterday it was the annual Art Night in my area, and I opened my office and studio to the public. It’s a fun night where the studios and cafés along the main street stay open late with art-related events.
Looking forward to the evening, I went for an early morning drive to pick up some locally produced Shiso syrup (Japanese herbal syrup). It was my first time driving in a month, so I was a bit nervous, but I successfully completed the task.
In my office exhibition this time, I displayed not only the Shiso syrup, postcards, and bean necklaces but also some Furoshiki that I recently started making as prototypes for a new project. I was pleasantly surprised by how many people took an interest in the Furoshiki, and I had great conversations with them.
For the exhibition, I also invited a Ukrainian artist whom we hosted two years ago at a gallery run by my partner and his friends. We had been exchanging messages, but it was our first time seeing each other in a year and a half. While setting up her artwork, we talked about the background of her pieces and caught up on life. Our kids were also with us, trying to communicate in baby talk, Ukrainian, Japanese, and German all mixed together. They ran around, fought and laughed, making it clear they were having fun.
The visitors to my office seemed to enjoy the diversity, and it reminded me of how wonderful it is to connect through art, design, and culture. I’m grateful to my partner, the gallery members who decided to host her, and the cultural foundation that supported the event.
A couple of friends were also exhibiting at the same event, so we took some time during breaks to visit other studios and cafés together.
Life, in its way, can be quite wonderful. This morning, I enjoyed breakfast with the artist family and my family. I took a silent time to recall the nice time at a sauna at the hotel.
I’m already looking forward to next year’s Art Night.
