Funeral for a friend - tough times : January 30 2025

in Actifit8 days ago

Got a different day lining up - a funeral for a friend of my wife and someone I have known the last 15 years. Funeral was held in St Mary Catholic Church in North Sydney. It was done with full pomp as befits a funeral director.

There was a didgeridoo player a dirge to start. Our friend had Irish and indigenous roots. The rest of the ceremony was Irish Catholic. Two sopranos sang in fine voice accompanied by violin and piano

Service was deeply touching - two of Ken's sons talked. Heaps of brothers and friends said prayers. 4 grandchildren told stories of their Papa memories. Two of the girls were at our wedding. And the hardest task was Ken's wife telling us how much she loved Ken. We all know that. She was amazing

Sorry - no photo of the church and no chance to go to the wake. The church is opposite North Sydney Oval - an important place in our story. My wife and I had our 2nd date here - we watched Women's World Cup cricket.

Funerals are tough for me - there were 400 people. Would be hard pressed to get 40 at mine BUT would get a heap more streamed around the world. Would like to think my granddaughter(s) get a chance to know me like Ken's did. Not working that way so far.

Headed home as my wife had meetings. Walked to shops to get a few things. Flowers along the way - gladiolus emerging

Plumbago in blue. Went out walking later on to get the steps in. I said I needed to find birds - Ken loved birds

Wisteria popping out in a few spots - did find a bird

Might not have been a favourite with Ken as they are quite destructive. They scrape leaves into huge mounds and use the warmth of the mound to keep the eggs warm

Perfect leaf litter to start a mound

And to fill the bird story - an owl statue in the next garden down

Interesting way to dispose of old tyres - rather than pay the tyre company - dump them on the verge and out plants in the ring

Phots done. Birds found. Vale Ken - RIP

Dinner: Beef bourgignon

Brown the sliced beef and set aside. Saute onion, garlic, capsicum. Add red wine and beef stock and herbs and come chopped veges (carrot anf zucchini). Recipes do bouquet garni - I just did herbs. Also added some cooked tomatoes my wife had made - not in the recipe

Added the browned meat at the end - flour added then.

Recipes brown with flour. Makes the pan messy. Served with pasta

A tough day. Too many herbs in the dish. Need a bush of herbs to do bouquet garni.

Low steps for a low day
