I needed to roast coffee today for a customer in Portland, Oregon, as well as a couple for myself and one for @silvertop. I ended up roasting 7 pounds altogether. I had slept in, so I was seriously behind for the day. Mondays are often like that. It seems like anymore that I need an inordinate amount of sleep. 😏
Once that was done, after a coffee and a bite of a late lunch, we headed out for a hike. It’s been a while for a hike of any great length and with nothing much else on the docket, today was the day.
Along for the hike was @actifit-lamb, acting as friend and chaperone for her new friend-Pepe-yette! She was meeting Pepe frog for the first time!
Pepe looks like he might be a bit smitten with her!

We went up to the off grid cabin. It seems incredible, but the mosquitoes are out and they are out for blood! 🩸 I’m not too happy about that as I always have varying degrees of cellulitis from their bites! 😒 Along the way, I found some very nice specimens of a red ‘shroom. Enjoy!
A bright spot in a rather dull colored environment. Spring growth will soon change that dullness, but it’s not quite here yet.

how do you make decaff coffee?
Decaffeination occurs with the green beans after they are picked. First, they dry them in the sun, usually. Once dried, they can then do one of 3 different processes. The best process is water decaffeination. It's natural and works well.
The second best is one called 'natural decaffeination' which involves using carbon monoxide. I would only choose this type IF the water process wasn't available.
The third type is chemical decaffeination, which I don't like and don't recommend. You can smell the chemicals and who wants to drink them anyway?
I roast decaf coffee for myself and the regular stuff for my husband and our customers. I occasionally will drink regular coffee, but feel the decaf is better for me. I only roast the water processed variety.

The best way to start is first-do it outside, not inside! You can use a hot air popcorn popper. I have other methods that work well.
