Today was the pre-school checkup for my 6-year-old second son.

In Japan, it is common for children to receive a medical checkup at the school they will enter during the October-November period prior to entering elementary school. In our family, our second son will enter elementary school next spring. I had him leave the day-care center early at noon and head to the elementary school.

It was relatively warm today and I did not need a jacket while walking, but I was completely chilled as I waited in line in front of the entrance of the elementary school.

Looking around, I saw many mothers and toddlers talking with other mothers and toddlers who knew each other, as if many of them were enrolling in the same kindergarten nearby. There is only one other child entering this elementary school from the day-care center where my second son attends. Once again, I am starting with almost no friends among mothers, but I am not as anxious as I was when my first son entered the school.

After the registration, the parents waited in a separate room, and a boy in the 5th grade guided my son through the various health checkup sites as a guidance counselor. The boy was probably nervous, too, and he said his name with a broken smile. It was cute to see him trying so hard.

In this type of medical checkup, some children may start crying when separated from their parents, or they may embarrass the 5th graders who are in charge of guiding them. While waiting in the parent waiting room, some fathers and mothers were called by some teachers to go to their children. Fortunately, my son came back with the 5th graders with a cool face.

Finally, there is an interview with the school teacher in the presence of the parents. The interview was very simple: after being asked his name, age, and the name of the daycare he attends, he was shown a panel with pictures of animals, appliances, etc., and had to answer what they were.

Elephant, giraffe, television.”

After answering that way, the vice principal asked, “Do you watch a lot of television?” and my son inadvertently answered, “Yes”. In fact, my second son loves computers and does not watch TV.

So,

“What TV shows do you watch?”

the vice-principal asked him, and he got confused and shut up 😂

On the way home, we bought some snacks at a convenience store. Between walking to school and back and wandering around the school, I walked more than 5,000 steps today!
