This is one of the agave family, most of them make this huge flower only once in their lives, just before they die. It's a variegated agave of some kind and the plant behind it is a yucca

Thanks for the info, this one only flowers once a year but survives the flowering year after year, unless it's on a hill and the length and weight of the flower makes it uproot and topple over! Unfortunately I've seen it happen. Yes, the plant behind it, is defintely a yucca! ;)
