thursday, two days before another snowboard trip. i think i should relax my legs and body (as if my legs are not part of my body) for a bit, shouldn't i? that means no stressful and exhaustive activities until saturday. in my world, that only means that it would be better to stay close to home than to go out into the world. no nightwalking. that night looks inviting, but i really need to stay away from any possible mishaps. i guess, i will be gym bound for the coming 2 days.
treadmill is the key. i'm just glad that japan tv shows has unending supply of interesting stuff. i was immediately hooked by this tv program which ranked the top 30 best world heritage sites based on local surveys. of course, the japanese public's biases will be shown through this survey. this was very interesting, i wonder if any site from the philippines will be included? here were the notable ones which i also found fascinating.
parthenon in greece came in at 23. the show featured this "blood moon" phenomenon which was captured against the parthenon, it was indeed very captivating. i also wanted to visit this site and part of the reason of that was the never ending greek saga fascination. greek mythology is still widely used as plot points in series and dramas so greek mythology will never die out.
cappadocia in turkey made it at 22 on this list. this interesting rock formations clustered in this arid area also catches your attention, but the survey was more interested on the hot air balloon rides. i guess this event really draws in the crowd. if i do have the chance to go here, i would most likely stay on the ground and take pictures of the balloons, but i will be more invested on the rock formations and the bronze age homes carved in them.
angkor wat in cambodia also made it at 17 in this list. the best view is at sunset with the orange red sky and the temples' silhouette. couldn't agree more of how picturesque this really is. cambodia is a country that i do not need a visa to visit, so this is more accessible to me.
mont saint-michel in france is indeed fascinating, too. it is a tidal island built with an abbey at the top. it really served like a fort in the olden times. if i remembered right, quicksands are frequent around this island, and people can have the opportunity to experience them. they will teach you how to activate the quicksand and how to escape one as part of the tour.
now here comes the japanese biases, mount fuji and itsukushima shrine. mount fuji needs no introduction, it has become a symbol for japan, that snow capped mountain is well known. a must see view is taking a picture of the mountain over a sea of clouds, i would also love to take that picture too.
itsukushima shrine with the famous floating tori gate in hiroshima was the other one at 3rd place. indeed it does looks enchanting. the best view for them was in new year celebrations, when the tori gate will be captured with fireworks as it's background. for me though, the tori gate in the middle of the sea is fascinating enough.
and just when i thought that the biases have stopped, here was the 1st, kyoto cultural sites. to be fair, kyoto indeed boasts a lot of heritage sites and having them so many in one place is a plus. you will have the best examples of temples and shrines in different shapes and sizes all in one region. the show ranked the byodoin in uji, kyoto as the most picturesque. now this piqued my interest to come to kyoto again. but then, the over tourism will be the main foe.
so what did i gather from this show? aside from the japanese biases, this show definitely showed which countries are doing there best in promoting these sites to the world. the visuals of the site does matter but without any promotion then it would never be known. no one will come without any ease of accessibility; no one will stay without proper accommodation. tourism is such a huge industry which needs cooperation from the moment the plane lands on the country until it leaves. the philippines still needs more investment in this department.
