Moving day is done! I’m writing this from our new apartment, where everything is still half in boxes, but it already feels more like home than anywhere we’ve been in years. My activity count today hit a record high since joining Actifit, which is no surprise—most of it came from climbing stairs and moving what felt like a mountain of stuff into the apartment. There’s something satisfying about that kind of physical work when you know it’s for your own space, even if my legs are already threatening to revolt tomorrow.
The weather gave us a bit of a break today, which was a small but welcome gift. It’s still chilly out, but the wind finally died down, and standing in the backyard, soaking in the sun, actually felt pleasant for the first time in what feels like weeks. After all the freezing gusts lately, having a calm, sunny moment to catch my breath made the day feel just a little less overwhelming.
The apartment itself is incredible. There’s a tiny 5x5 room that I’ve already claimed as my office, tucked right off the kitchen. The kitchen is huge—at least, it feels huge to us after years without a proper one—and it has a gas stove with a built-in griddle. That might not seem like much, but it’s been five years since Es and I have had a kitchen we could really use. The possibilities feel endless. I used to do so much with food: making yogurt, cheese, ferments, all the little homestead-y projects that got pushed aside by necessity. Now, I’m already daydreaming about dusting off those skills and seeing what I can make in this space.
The pets are just as excited about the new place as we are. They’ve been through it all with us, from living out in the Sandhills to being crammed into motel rooms, and this apartment seems to hit the sweet spot. Watching them sniff every corner and claim their favorite spots has been its own kind of reward. It’s like they know this is the first time in a while that we’ve had a place where we can all settle in and just be for a while.
Of course, the move isn’t completely over yet. We still have to make a trip to grab the rest of our things from storage. That’s going to be a project in itself—sorting through what we have, deciding what stays and what goes, and figuring out how to make the most of this fresh start. It’s a big shift from where we were even a few months ago, and it feels like the kind of opportunity that doesn’t come around often. I want to be deliberate about how we approach life from here.
As far as fitness goes, I didn’t set any specific goals for today, but honestly, I didn’t need to. Moving is its own workout, and I was on my feet and moving the entire day. Sometimes, just keeping up with everything life throws at you is a win, and today definitely felt like one of those days.
It’s been a long, exhausting day, but one filled with hope and excitement for what’s ahead. This apartment is more than just a place to live—it’s a chance to rebuild, recenter, and start creating a life. I’m so ready to see where this takes us.
