I love peonies. Their green leaves and small bushes and especially their blossoms. So many colours and forms! This is quite an old-fashioned one, a dark purplish red.
Unfortunately, voles like peonies, too. Not the blossoms or leaves, but their roots (ok, technical term is rhizomes) and several years ago all the peonies in our garden died and this has been a gift from a neighbour.

The cultured garden variety likes it best in temperate climate, but there are wild forms from the Mediterranean area to China.
