Vegans are taking over the world and vegetarians are feeling the heat. They say restaurants are ditching their cheesy and eggy delights for plant-based impostors that pretend to be meat. The Vegetarian Society says it gets bombarded with complaints from members who crave more classic vegetarian fare, not just vegan patties or beans.
Vegetarians outnumber vegans by more than two to one in the UK, but the food industry seems to snub them. Supermarkets, cafes and eateries are pandering to the soaring demand for vegan products, which could rake in $162 billion globally in a decade. Some vegetarian restaurants have betrayed their roots and gone fully plant-based, while others offer vegan knock-offs for cheese and mozzarella.
Vegetarians say they long for dishes like mac and cheese when they eat out. They also doubt the need to mimic the meat experience with fake meat. They feel they are being shoved together with vegans and gluten-free munchers, and losing their identity as a unique group.
Some vegetarians have caved in to veganism for moral or environmental reasons, but others still relish dairy and eggs. They hope restaurants will respect their tastes and offer more diversity and choice for them.
