I'm tired and resting my beat up feet and tired legs after quite a successful 24 hour effort at the Fat Ox 24 hour that saw me hit over 80 miles and a 7th place finish.
Yesterday's heat made the first half of the ultra tough and I made sure to maintain a steady fluid intake and snack often as I steadily circled the approximate 1 mile loop path.
I was maintaining about 16 minute pace pretty regularly but my knees began to bother me and I decided to take some rest breaks and stretch out in my car to try to nap a little (and hopefully let my legs recover at least a little bit).
I actually did this 3 times during the night and early morning and it seemed to help as my legs felt better and I was able to move more easily and slowly accumulate mileage and move up the leader board.
It was a beautiful clear but chilly night that had me donning my tights, warm shirt, hat and gloves and finally my fleece jacket. That, and warm snacks and hot coffee and cocao kept me warmed and moving
.
As the hours passed it was simply a matter of grinding out miles as I eventually moved into 7th place early this morning and then just kept adding on miles as my goal turned into a drive to hit 80 miles - which I did as the dawn began to break and the final hour rolled around.
A final push brought me across the finish pad with less than 10 minutes remaining and I could sit and enjoy a hearty, hot and very welcome breakfast.
I'll be sore for a few days but now I have a higher goal in the upcoming Across the Years 24 hour that I'll be running over New Year's and maybe I'll edge closer to 100 miles.
But for now it's a hot shower, dinner and my comfortable bed back home 🏡.
