Wandering around Taishogun
I live in Nishijin, Kyoto, near temples and shrines filled with tourists such as Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Senbon Shakado Temple, but today I decided to go a little further and walk around the area known as Daishogun.
Walking along the road stretching southwest from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, I arrived at a shopping street. It is called “Daishogun Shopping Street. It is a rather old shopping street with no arcade, but each store was doing its best to keep its business going. In this shopping street, there are yokai dolls standing in front of each store. It is also called Ichijyo Yokai Street.
The photo below shows one of the stores, Hachiman-ya. It is said that this store deals with miscellaneous goods related to yokai. Hachiman-ya had not yet opened when I took this picture, but I could see the mysterious dolls on the second floor.
A three-minute walk from the shopping street brought us to a small but magnificent shrine. It is the Daishogun Hachi-jinja Shrine.
This shrine is said to have been built at the northwest corner of the Dauchiura (Imperial Palace) at the time of the establishment of the capital in the Heian period (794-1185) as a guardian deity to ward off the evil of the direction of the people.
The photo below shows the torii gate of the Daishogun Hachi-jinja Shrine.
The Daishogun is the star god Tenno Daishogun in Yin-yang-do, which is the god in charge of the direction. For this reason, it was revered by the public as a god of direction and protection from evil, and was treated favorably by the powers that be of the time.
The photo below shows the main hall of the shrine. As I was praying, I heard a loud roar from inside the main hall. It sounded like they were praying. The roar sounded like an incantation, though I could not understand what it was saying.
I also noticed a huge tree in the precincts of the temple. It is an ogatama tree. Ogatama” is written in Chinese characters as ‘ogitama,’ and the tree is often planted in shrines and used in Shinto rituals.

I wandered further around the area. It was a beautiful sunny day, warm and pleasant to walk around. There are many other large shrines and temples in Nishijin, but I was too tired to reach 6,000 steps today, so I finished my walk and went home.

大将軍あたりをぶらぶら歩く
私は京都の西陣というところに住んでおり、北野天満宮や千本釈迦堂といった観光客がいっぱいの寺社が近いのですが、今日は少し足を延ばして、大将軍と呼ばれるところを中心に歩いてみました。
北野天満宮から南西に伸びる道を歩くと、商店街に着きました。大将軍商店街というそうです。アーケードもなく、やや古びた感じの商店街なのですが、それぞれの店は頑張って営業していました。この商店街では各店頭に妖怪の人形が立っています。ここは一条妖怪ストリートともいうそうです。
その中の一つの店、八幡屋の写真が下の写真です。妖怪に関する雑貨を扱う店だそうです。これを撮った時、八幡屋はまだ開店前でしたが、２階に怪しげな人形が飾ってあるのが見えました。
商店街から３分ほど歩くと、小さいけれど立派な神社がありました。大将軍八神社（だいしょうぐん はちじんじゃ）です。
この神社は平安建都の際に方除けの守護神として大内裏の北西角の地に建てられたのが始まりとされ、当初は大将軍堂と称しましたが、江戸時代初期に大将軍社と改められ、更に大将軍八神社となって現在に至ります。
下の写真は大将軍八神社の鳥居です。
大将軍とは、陰陽道でいう星神天大将軍で、これは方位をつかさどる神であります。このため、方除け・厄除けの神として世間の崇敬を集め、時の権力者たちにも厚遇されました。
下の写真は神社の本殿です。お参りしていたから本殿の中から大きな唸り声が聞こえてきました。祈祷をしているようでした。唸り声は呪文のようで、何を言っているのかわかりませんでしたが。
そして境内の巨木にも目が行きました。オガタマノキだそうです。オガタマは漢字で書くと「招霊(おぎたま)」であり、神社によく植えられ、神事にも使われている木だそうです。

さらに周辺をぶらぶらとしました。今日は快晴で、暖かくて気分よく歩けました。西陣にはほかにも大きな神社仏閣が多数あるのですが、疲れたので今日は6000歩に届きませんでしたが散歩を終えて帰宅しました。
