MY VP IS RESTORED ;) so were taking it old school on this one with this legendary album from the Human League. I hope this inspires you to share some of your collection,
The Human League are an English synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977. The group signed to Virgin Records in 1979 and later attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981.
It is the third studio album by English synth-pop band the Human League, first released in the UK on 16 October 1981. The album was recorded between March and September 1981 following the departure of founding members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, and saw the band shift direction from their prior avant-garde electronic style toward a more pop-friendly, commercial sound led by frontman Philip Oakey.
Interesting point to note, they wanted the album art to look like should look like an edition of Vogue. Explaining why the band's portraits are close cropped and the girls had their hair tied back for their photographs, Susan Ann Sulley explains, "we wanted people to still be able to buy the album in five years, we thought that hair styles would be the first thing to date. We had no idea people would still be buying it 25 years later."
I find this mental that even back then artists were thinking about what just wont be a fad and how to make their music timeless. They definitely achieved that with this one imo.
You can listen to the full project here,
But of course my favourite track off the album is "Don't You Want Me"
....dont you want me ooohohohhh.
It was this track that definitely helped the Human League to cement their place as pioneers in the late disco pop genre, with Dare ranked on a NME top album list number 77, and the same year, Q named Dare the 19th best album of the 1980s.
Those synth notes at the beginning are unmistakeable, and after speaking to a few people alot of people seem to know the track but never the name!
Let me know what you think, and even if it might not be your bag I promise you can hear the inspiration from this song across the music spectrum.
Tracked down a cheeky extended mix for those DJ's out there
