Hola, queridos amigos de Hive. Hoy les vengo con un post que va entre análisis y recomendación musical. No es que vengo a decirles lo que tienen que escuchar ni mucho menos, pero me parece un lindo gesto cuando alguien quiere compartir su música o la música que le gusta conmigo. Esas intenciones de que nos conozcamos a través de nuestros gustos estéticos es algo que aprecio mucho.
Por eso, hoy quiero recomendarles un canal de Youtube que frecuento muy seguido. Básicamente porque considero que es uno de los mejores dedicados a hacer covers musicales.
Si son asiduos nadadores del banco de videos más grande de la red, no será ninguna novedad para ustedes que este tipo de canales abundan, pero este se destaca por las adaptaciones que le hace a cada una de las canciones interpretadas, además del gran número de artistas invitados con los que colaboran.
Ahora, veamos algunas de las piezas que considero de las más increíbles. Espero que les guste.

Hello, dear friends of Hive. Today I come to you with a post that goes between analysis and musical recommendation. It's not that I'm here to tell you what to listen to, but I think it's a nice gesture when someone wants to share their music or the music they like with me. Those intentions of getting to know each other through our aesthetic tastes is something I appreciate very much.
That's why today I want to recommend you a Youtube channel that I frequent very often. Because I consider it one of the best dedicated to making music covers.
If you are regular swimmers of the largest video bank on the net, it will be no news to you that this kind of channel abounds, but this one stands out for the adaptations made to each of the songs performed, in addition to the large number of guest artists with whom they collaborate.
Now, let's see some of the pieces that I consider some of the most incredible. I hope you like them.

Umbrella - Vintage "Singin' in the Rain" Style
Tocadiscos Posmoderno
Tal y como su nombre nos indica, el proyecto del increíble pianista y arreglista Scott Bradley, es el de transformar todos esos temas populares de nuestro tiempo en éxitos de la época dorada del Jazz, blues, rock and roll, disco, soul, etc.
Y la canción con la que abro este post es Umbrella, uno de los éxitos más grandes de la cantante barbadense Rihanna. Pero esta vez sin el R&B/Hip hop de la original, sino con una adaptación al estilo de uno de las más grandes películas musicales jamás hechas, Singin' in the Rain de Gene Kelly y Stanly Donen.
El sonido del clarinete, el pulso marcado del bajo y la batería, en conjunto con la interpretación estilo casino del piano nos transporta a los años 50', además de una explosiva coreografía de Tap de parte de las hermosas Sarah Reich y Melinda Sullivan (The Sole Sisters) y liderados por la voz del divertido y carismático Casey Abrams que convierten un tema pop en un musical de Broadway.
Postmodern Jukebox
As the name suggests, the project of the incredible pianist and arranger Scott Bradley, is to transform all those popular songs of our time into hits of the golden age of jazz, blues, rock and roll, disco, soul, etc...
And the song with which I open this post is Umbrella, one of the biggest hits of the Barbadian singer Rihanna. But this time without the R&B/Hip hop of the original, but with an adaptation in the style of one of the greatest movie musicals ever made, Singin' in the Rain by Gene Kelly and Stanly Donen.
The sound of the clarinet, the pulse-pounding bass, and drums, along with the casino style piano playing takes us back to the '50s, along with explosive tap choreography by the beautiful Sarah Reich and Melinda Sullivan (The Sole Sisters) and led by the voice of the fun and charismatic Casey Abrams that turns a pop song into a Broadway musical.
Dream On - From Power Ballad to Power Blues
Un clásico drámatico y poderoso
Esta vez es la hermosa Morgan James, quien con su potente voz llena de gran energía esta icónica balada de la banda de Hard Rock, Aerosmith.
Es difícil encontrar una versión que logre llenar los zapatos de Steven Tyler. Pero esta vez nos sorprendemos al ver que sin los instrumentos típicos y amplificados del Rock (esta vez un piano, la bacteria y un cuarteto de cuerdas) logran emocionarnos y agitar nuestras cabezas.
El solo del cello es de los más geniales que se pueden escuchar en este instrumento jaja
A dramatic and powerful classic.
This time it's the beautiful Morgan James, who with her powerful voice fills with great energy this iconic ballad of the Hard Rock band, Aerosmith.
It's hard to find a version that manages to fill Steven Tyler's shoes. But this time we are surprised to see that without the typical amplified Rock instruments (this time a piano, the battery, and a string quartet) manage to excite us and shake our heads.
The cello solo is one of the coolest you can hear on this instrument haha.
Toxic - Vintage 1930s Torch Song
A veces, el estilo lo cambia todo
Recuerdo que había una canción de Bad Bunny cuya letra me resultaba un poco repulsiva. La verdad es que el escuchar a mis amigos cantarla me hacía fruncir el ceño (descuiden, ya no soy tan amargado). Hasta que un grupo de chamos decidieron versionar esa misma canción en forma de bolero. De repente, la historia y los insultos adquirieron otro gusto. Y no lo digo para ponderar un género sobre otro, pero de alguna manera se me hizo más interesante. Lo mismo me pasó con esta canción.´
No soy fan de la música de Britney Spears, pero no es como si viviera debajo de una roca. Este es uno de esos temas que sonaban en todas partes y que las chicas de mi clase querían coreografiar. En ese entonces no sabía inglés y cuando aprendí nunca me interesó saber de qué iba la letra. Su estilo era demasiado "pop" para mí.
Pero al escuchar esta versión, me di cuenta de la letra le queda muy bien. Después de todo una "Torch Song" es un tema de amor en forma de lamento, que tradicionalmente hablan sobre amores perdidos o el fin de una relación.
Melinda Doolittle hace un extraordinario trabajo al transmitir todo el dolor, la desesperación y aflicción de tener que tomar la decisión de alejarnos de aquello que nos encanta, pero nos hace daño.
Sometimes, style changes everything.
I remember there was a Bad Bunny song whose lyrics I found a bit repulsive. The truth is that listening to my friends singing it made me frown (don't worry, I'm not so bitter anymore). Until a group of guys decided to cover that same song in bolero form. Suddenly, the story and the insults took on a different flavor. And I'm not saying this to weigh one genre over another, but somehow it became more interesting to me. The same thing happened to me with this song.'
I'm not a fan of Britney Spears' music, but it's not like I live under a rock. This is one of those songs that was playing everywhere and the girls in my class wanted to choreograph. I didn't know English back then and when I learned I never cared to know what the lyrics were about. Its style was too "pop" for me.
But listening to this version, I realized that the lyrics fit it very well. After all a "Torch Song" is a love song in the form of a lament, which traditionally talks about lost loves or the end of a relationship.
Melinda Doolittle does an extraordinary job of conveying all the pain, despair, and grief of having to decide to walk away from what we love, but hurts us.
Creep - Vintage Ballad
La joya de la corona
Esta es el más reproducido y famoso cover de PMJ, o al menos eso creo. Lo cierto es que lo que me trae siempre de regreso a este canal es la hermosa voz de Haley Reinhart, probablemente de las mejores voces que he escuchado.
Su capacidad de cambiar los colores de su voz pasando de la sensualidad de una voz aterciopelada a un potente gruñido te hace caer de rodillas ante su talento. ¿Podría ser más impresionante? Sí, se grabó en una sola toma y Haley se estaba recuperando de un resfriado.
No es mucho lo que puedo decir de este cover, solo que de todos es el único que he escuchado una 4 veces mientras hacia este post. No tengo palabras, en serio. Pero podría dejarle uno de los mejores comentarios que le dejaron en su canal de Youtube:
The jewel in the crown
This is the most played and famous PMJ cover, or at least I think so. The truth is that what always brings me back to this channel is the beautiful voice of Haley Reinhart, probably one of the best voices I've ever heard.
Her ability to change the colors of her voice going from the sensuality of a velvety voice to a powerful growl brings you to your knees in front of her talent. Could it get any more impressive? Yes, it was recorded in one take and Haley was recovering from a cold.
Not much I can say about this cover, just that out of all of them it's the only one I've listened to 4 times while making this post. I have no words. But I could leave you one of the best comments left on their Youtube channel:

Mi primer amor de PMJ
Creo que estuve un buen tiempo enamorado de Kate Davis. Su voz y su carisma me dejan hipnotizado. Además toca el contrabajo, ¿a que es perfecta? jaja
La verdad es que antes de descubrir PMJ, los videos de Kate eran los que solía buscar en Youtube y este es el primero de los videos de este canal que vi.
La graciosa metáfora entre el upright bass (contrabajo) y la canción de Megan Trainor hizo que incluso me gustara la versión original jaja tengan, enamórense también.
My first PMJ love
I think I was in love with Kate Davis for a long time. Her voice and charisma leave me mesmerized. Plus she plays the upright bass, isn't she perfect? haha.
The truth is that before discovering PMJ, Kate's videos were the ones I used to look for on Youtube and this is the first of this channel's videos I watched.
The funny metaphor between the upright bass and Megan Trainor's song made me even like the original version haha here you go, fall in love too.

Tengo la tendencia de ilusionarme con las películas en las que incluyen una escena romántica en el baile de graduación (sí, me gustan esas películas). Y me hubiese gustado por vivir una experiencia similar. Bailar con la chica de mis sueños la canción que recordaríamos por siempre...

Disculpen... Lo cierto es que la letra de Closer no me resulta tan romántica (XD) pero esta versión trae esas escenas a mi cabeza.

I tend to get excited about movies that include a romantic prom scene (yes, I like those movies). And I would have loved to have a similar experience. To dance with the girl of my dreams to the song we would remember forever, to be able to embrace and stare at each other before melting into the most tender of kisses, fading the rest of the world around us...

Excuse me... The truth is that the lyrics of Closer are not so romantic to me (XD) but this version brings those scenes to my head.

Este cover tiene uno de mis arreglos vocales favoritos. El estilo de las Andrews Sisters consistía en estas armonías y los juegos vocales que han sido de gran influencia en la música contemporánea.
Quienes nos deleitan son las hermosas Olivia Kuper Harris, Sara Niemietz (<3) y Therese Curatolo.
A little swing and harmony
This cover has one of my favorite vocal arrangements. The Andrews Sisters style consisted of these harmonies and vocal interplays that have been so influential in contemporary music.

Old Town Road - Blues Style
Incluso con una leyenda
Hay que reconocer que cuando alguien de la talla de Miche Branden decide participar de tu proyecto es porque algo estás haciendo bien.
Esta versión de Old Time Road le da ese sabor clásico al estilo Nueva Orleans y la voz y la despampanante actitud de Miss Branden llenan de lujo y sofisticación a PMJ. Una joya, de verdad.
Even with a legend
You have to recognize that when someone of Miche Branden's stature decides to participate in your project it's because you're doing something right.
This version of Old Time Road gives it that classic New Orleans style flavor and Miss Branden's voice and stunning attitude fill PMJ with luxury and sophistication. A gem.
Sucker - 70's Roller Disco Style

Mi esposa me sorprendió cantando este tema de los Jonas Brothers y no logré explicarle que era porque había encontrado esta versión.
Pero bueno... Cuando empecé a reproducir este video mi cuarto se llenó de luces y una bola de cristal empezó a girar en el centro del techo.
Ok, no... Pero me lo imaginé y fue muy gracioso.
Disco Stu style.
My wife caught me singing this Jonas Brothers song and I couldn't explain to her that it was because I had found this version.
But well... When I started playing this video my room filled with lights and a crystal ball started spinning in the center of the ceiling.
Ok, no... But I imagined it and it was hilarious.
Radioactive - Jazz and... Beatbox?

Bueno, tampoco puedo poner todo el canal acá, ¿no?
Para finalizar, les dejo este cover en el que un increíble Blake Lewis y un no menos extraordinario Jacob Scesney los dejarán con la boca abierta con sus habilidades para el beatbox y un solo vuela sesos de saxo, respectivamente.
Es algo digno de ver y escuchar. Una combinación que se me hace un poco usual, pero muy genial.

To finish, I leave you with this cover in which an incredible Blake Lewis and a no less extraordinary Jacob Scesney will leave you open-mouthed with their beatboxing skills and a brain-blowing sax solo, respectively.
It's something worth seeing and hearing. A combination that seems a little unusual to me, but very cool.
¡Magnífica reseña! Cuando escribes que no le vas a decir a nadie que tiene que escuchar esto... Pues yo creo que sí hay que decirlo. Esta es una combinación tan interesante de creatividad en ingenio, además paradójicamente apuntando hacia el pasado, que realmente hay que hacer que las gente la escuche. Yo soy fan de ellos desde hace rato y de verdad me encanta su propuesta.
