THREE TUNE TUESDAY- keeping it local with sensational Australian Jazz chanteuse Leigh Carriage

in Music6 months ago (edited)

Hey there all you music aficionados around the world, thanks so much for introducing me to all of your tunes for @ablaze #ttt #ThreeTunesTuesday.

I now have a fantastic new playlist on my spotify account to dance to thanks to all of you guys, so thanks once again and I look forward to hearing more of your playlists!

So for my first week here, I shared with you one of my bestest favourite Aussie bands from the 1970's with Skyhooks here https://peakd.com/ttt/@chocolatescorpi/throwback-to-the-sensational-seventies-for-three-tune-tuesday

Then I took you into the 1980's with another awesome Aussie band with Pseudo Echo here https://peakd.com/hive-193816/@chocolatescorpi/three-more-top-aussie-tunes-for-3-tune-tuesday-the-sensational-pseudo-echo

Then last week I took you into the 1990's- 1999 to be precise, with another all time favourite Aussie band, the Cat Empire here https://peakd.com/hive-193816/@chocolatescorpi/and-into-the-1990s-for-the-cat-empire and don't forget, these guys are just about to embark on a world tour so you too can see them live! https://thecatempire.com/#

And this week, I'm keeping it local and a little more low key than those guys, but just as wonderful, amazing and brilliant.

This internationally renowned, award winning singer, songwriter, performer, composer and educator is a powerhouse, both in front of and behind the microphone and in 2022, won the Humanitarian Award from the Australian Women In Music Awards for her outstanding work coordinating mentoring programs for young musicians in regional, rural and isolated areas of Australia. And that is a pretty BIG deal for little ol Australia...https://leighcarriage.com/about

Leigh has captured the hearts of audiences at festivals including the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival (USA), Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival, Noosa Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Women’s Jazz Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival.

So without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to DR Leigh Carriage, songstress extraordinaire, one of Australia’s pre-eminent jazz vocalists and composers with her original compositions that are fast becoming “new standards” for aspiring Australian jazz singers AND my gorgeous, wonderful, warm, compassionate, kind, creative and clever cousin! https://leighcarriage.com/about I am Sooooo proud of her, to have come from a small and isolated country town, sitting singing together on the trampoline when we were kids, to where she is today, one of the most successful Jazz singers in Australia with her gorgeous Husband, Steve Russell, Long regarded as one of Australia’s finest jazz pianists and accompanists and a highly accomplished composer and arranger, Steve Russell - who you will meet next week! RESPECT.

Keep it to the Letter

I'd also like to tag @wrestlingdesires to join in the fun with her picks here too!

Dr Leigh Carriage, a senior music lecturer at Southern Cross University, has taken out the Humanitarian category at the Australian Women in Music Awards.

The AWMA recognised Dr Carriage with its Humanitarian Award for her tireless educational work, particularly over the past decade coordinating the Visiting Artists Mentoring Program for Women in Contemporary Music directed to regional areas of Australia. https://www.scu.edu.au/news/2022/educator-receives-national-recognition-at-australian-women-in-music-awards.php

All While You Sleep

I'd also like to tag @littlebee4 to join in and share her faves from all over the world too.

“The Award gave me an opportunity to shine a light on Lismore, on regionalism, on the absolute generosity and consistency of APRA-AMCOS to support the grants that I’ve applied for over the 16-year duration of the APRA-AMCOS Songwriting Workshops at Southern Cross University. It’s the consistency of that funding that allowed me a platform to keep bringing some of the best singer-songwriters, composers and instrumentalists from Australia and New Zealand to the Northern Rivers.” https://www.scu.edu.au/news/2022/educator-receives-national-recognition-at-australian-women-in-music-awards.php

And I'd also like to tag @bemier to join us here too!

Artists like Bernard Fanning, Mia Dyson, The Stiff Gins, Hiatus Kaiyote, Troy Cassar-Daly, Katie Noonan, Lior and more have all come to the University’s Lismore campus to share their skills, insights and inspirations with Southern Cross music students.

“I was in very good company with the industry’s best of the best,” Dr Carriage said. “Seeing Tina Arena perform her tribute to Olivia Newton John was breathtaking. And Emma Donavan singing so magnificently; it was terrific to reconnect with Emma who I taught for a short time at TAFE on Eora land in Sydney many years ago. https://www.scu.edu.au/news/2022/educator-receives-national-recognition-at-australian-women-in-music-awards.php

Sort:

Piano, bass, trumpet, percussion, guitar and vocals-that's all you need for jazz. All the more so when that fantastic voice carries the whole thing.👍

She was asked this question once:
When you walk on stage, what do you want to give your audience?
And this was the response:
I want them to feel welcomed and safe, and part of the weaving, as well as an array of emotions – joy, sadness, passion, beauty, excitement. I want them to hear the risk in the music, so they’re in the moment with us and share and feel the freshness.👍

Yeah I so totally agree and infact 4 of my absolute favourite musical instruments are all core instruments in jazz and that is the double bass, piano, brush drums and vocals and there's nothing else you need.

Especially when you have such a magnificent voice like hers!

Have you heard of Leigh before?

No!
But your contribution has been a game changer!
Thank you for that.

So glad that she has had that much of an impact on you.

It's a good reminder that not all amazing talented musicians are household names- there are millions more around the world that I think are actually more talented than the popular ones, so that's what I would prefer to do here, create awareness of them than the ones that we all know about anyway...

So make sure you stay tuned over the next few weeks as I have a few more locally made, very talented musicians planned to share with you all.

And next weeks will be Leigh's husband Steve- A highly sought after Pianist and musician in his own right. 😃

Now where do I put Melissa Etheridge after her incredible concert that I went to last night...🤣

This is also the reason I try to avoid names that are already known to everyone at the Jazz Matinee. Not well known has nothing to do with not being talented.
You have to put Melissa in the article about living legends. She definitely is.

Oh yes, she certianly is!

And watch this space for the video tomorrow- or possibly tonight...🤣

OMG her voice is incredible and jazzy! I'll be checking out her works more on youtube. Thank you so much for highlighting her :D, I truly love it.

Yes her voice is truly incredible but unfortunately the average audio recording of the YT videos do not do it justice at all, so I recommend that you visit her page here and can listen to high quality audio recording instead.

And enjoy. 😊

I have never heard of this singer before. I love her jazzy style.
Thank you for bringing her to #ttt.
Cheers!

So glad that you enjoyed meeting Leigh!

She she is such a talented person, such a beautiful human being and has such an amazing voice and she deserves to be much more globally recognised, so please don't hesitate to share her music far and wide!
These are links to her audio recordings on her website where you can hear high quality recordings- which are better quality than the yt videos.

Please enjoy and don't forget to put her on your playlists!

You can indeed be proud of your cousin 😇

She has a wonderful voice and feeling for music. So talented lady! 🙌

Yes I certainly am!

If I could be as half as talented, dedicated and determined as her....

I would LOVE it if you could all meet each other one day because I know that you are also a very talented musician too!

Thanks for the tag, will see if i join in one day 😊
Have a beautiful weekend 👋🏻😊🌸☀️🐝
!LADY

I would LOVE to hear some of the music that you have discovered in your travels because I'm sure that there would be a huge array of awesome tunes!

And what did you think of my cousin Leigh?

She's soo talented and has such an amazing voice!

Will find some time soon.
My music choice is very diverse and i can listen to almost anything…
Although I haven’t been listening lately. Normally i would have music on while I paint or draw… that has been a while as I haven’t been able to set up my studio for years.

Very talented… keep sharing her beautiful voice 😊 she should be known by all 😁

Great, I look forward to it!
And I'm sure at the moment, you're probably enjoying the sounds of nature anyway.

Thank you!
Yes i am, and getting the garden cleaned up. The snow revealed a lot of mess and the last owners didn’t maintain the garden. So lots to do.
I am building veggie beds and today got soil and compost. Will finish building them in the next days. 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱😊
Have a great weekend 🤗🥰

Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear that but I am sure that you will feel so satisfied when it is not only cleaned up, but actually yours...especially when every thing blooms and comes into it's own unique beauty..

See it really is a blank canvas for you to create your own stamp and style for you to be comfortable with your veggie garden.

Have fun, I know that you will!
🐠🐃🐌🕷🐍🐓🦆🐸🐁🐿🦋🐢🐞🦍🐈🦆🐥🐜😊❤️🙏💛🙏💚🙏💙🙏💜😊🦑🐛🐄🦇🐪🦏🐳🐊🦀🦌🐖🐢🐏🐋🐝

Thank you, you are kind.
It does feel so different… it is ours. After so much moving around and always had horrible rentals, this is still such a welcome change… even though we have to do a lot to renovate… clean up.
Can’t wait to discover more spring flowers and explore our forest.

Yes, you are so right. A blank canvas. Yesterday we finished the first 4 veggie beds. It needs to settle a bit and tomorrow we add the last bags of soil. End of the week the veggies go out 🌱🌱🌱🌱
All so exciting.

I soooo will 😊👋🏻
Have a beautiful day too 🐝
