On 8 March 1974, the American progressive rock band Kansas released their eponymously titled debut album.

The album was distributed by Kirshner in the United States and Epic Records in other countries.

Kansas was formed from the merger of two Topeka bands: Kerry Livgren, who came from a previous band called Kansas, and White Clover, which focused on mainstream rock and blues.

After signing with Kirshner Records in 1973, the group moved to New York to record their first album, choosing material from both bands' repertoires.

Livgren's compositions are generally longer and more elaborate, with lyrics reflecting his interest in Eastern religions. For example, ‘Journey from Mariabronn’ is inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel ‘Narcissus and Goldmund’, while ‘Belexes’ and ‘Aperçu’ are influenced by the pseudo-Asian sound of Giacomo Puccini's ‘Turandot’.

To promote the album, Kansas used print ads with the slogan ‘Kansas is Koming’. They also released a promotional single entitled ‘Man the Stormcellars: Kansas is Koming!’, featuring Don Kirshner.

Two 7-inch singles, ‘Can I Tell You’ and ‘Lonely Wind’, were released, but failed to chart.

However, a live version of ‘Lonely Wind’ reached the Top 100 in early 1979. The album was remastered on CD in 2004 and on vinyl in 2014.
