On January 19, 1985, Foreigner's single “I Want To Know What Love Is” reached number 1 in the UK.
This song was the first single from the album “Agent Provocateur”, released in 1984, and was written mainly by Mick Jones.
However, Lou Gramm, the band's former leader, has stated that he contributed 35% to the song.
Production was handled by Jones and Alex Sadkin, and included backing vocals by the New Jersey Mass Choir and singer Jennifer Holliday.
Considered an emotional ballad, “I Want To Know What Love Is” not only reached number one on the UK charts, but also reached the same position in the US, becoming Foreigner's first pop single to achieve this milestone.

It also made a huge impact in several other countries, receiving positive reviews praising Lou Gramm's emotional performance and the work of the choir.
A 12-inch version was released, with “Street Thunder (Marathon Theme)” as the B-side, an instrumental track.
The song has endured over time, being one of Foreigner's most recognizable songs and one of the longest-running radio hits in rotation.
It charted in the top 25 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Recurrents chart in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
“I Want To Know What Love Is” has continued to receive critical acclaim, being considered one of the greatest songs of all time, ranking 476th in 2004 and 479th in 2010 according to Rolling Stone magazine.
