Odd Meter songs - ttt

For today I wanted to share songs that use irregular time signatures, what does this mean?

This means that they are bars that do not follow a regular and predictable structure, but have a different number of beats.

These songs, even though they are not composed entirely of these irregular time signatures, have sections that are very interesting and that show the creativity of those who wrote them.

I also want to make it clear that if you are not a musician and it is difficult for you to understand what this theme is about, don't worry, the important thing is to feel the rhythm and the sensations that these songs give you.

The Stranglers - Golden Brown

In its introduction which starts with a harpsichord, we can analyze that the song starts in 13/8 which makes it an irregular time signature. The moment the song starts to sing, the time signature becomes a 12/8.

Besides being a piece that grabs you from the first moment, it gives you a nostalgic feeling as if you were living in a fantasy world and it is truly ahead of its time.

Ariel Pink -White Freckles

Leaving all the controversy about this artist behind, Ariel Pink leaves us with a good example of how to use irregular time signatures.

This was the first song I heard from him and I liked it very much, just because of the way they used the time signatures. I'll allow the musicians to guess how many irregular time signatures there are in this song.

Porcupine Tree - Open Car

In progressive rock, it is very common to find this kind of irregular metrics. An example of them is this song. Just by listening to the guitar riff, we can realize that the song has a very interesting rhythm and as we keep listening to it, it is constantly changing.

It is an example of how a song can transmit different sensations at the moment of listening.

These were the three songs I chose for this ttt, and they are a good example of how we can get out of the routine of listening to the same rhythm and make the music a bit more captivating. Thanks for passing by here!
