Saludos apreciada comunidad de Hive y Music, en esta oportunidad les hablaré sobre el Calipso, invité a mi madre @geronimamunoz para hacer una versión que me encanta a dos voces, combinando dos calipsos “Cecilia y The Dusty Band, cabe destacar, que el calipso se ejecuta con tambores llamados bumbac en la percusión, sin embargo, lo quise mostrar solo con el cuatro venezolano para destacar el trabajo vocal, así le damos entrada al Carnaval como Fiesta Tradicional.

Aprovechando que en el mes de febrero e inicios de marzo, se celebra el Carnaval en Venezuela, es importante hacer referencia al Calipso como género musical, es una de las manifestaciones tradicionales más importantes e invitan a bailar y disfrutar la temporada año tras año. Esta forma musical, tiene su origen en las Antillas, marcando gran influencia en los pobladores del Callao, Estado Bolívar, Estado Delta Amacuro, Carúpano y Guiria (Estado Sucre).

Hoy les traigo la fusión de dos Calipsos, el primero llamado Cecilia, autor anónimo y el segundo es titulado The dusty band, compuesto por Don Luis Giraud, auténtico “calipsonian” venezolano, con este calipso casi siempre, inician la comparsa de carnaval en el pueblo del Callao, según el Maestro Oswaldo Lares Soto, nos comentaba en una reunión que estos temas son parte de los calipsos más sonados en el Estado Bolívar, invita al inicio de la comparsa a la reunión, alegría y organizarse para la debida comparsa, llenando de colorido las calles donde los tambores Bumbac se lucen en la ejecución y las Madamas muestran los trajes típicos danzando de manera elegante e imponente acompañadas por otros personajes. Se canta en dialecto “patois” que es una mezcla del inglés y francés con su propio dialecto.

Es importante resaltar que el Maestro Oswaldo Lares, es gran investigador de nuestra Música Tradicional Venezolana, nos brinda un archivo sonoro de calipsos que posteriormente graba en el año 1983 con la Agrupación Folclórica CONVENEZUELA, siendo el Director General de la misma, en muchas ocasiones lo vi desde muy pequeño en los escenarios tocando el tambor de calipso con la alegría que lo caracteriza, recientemente cumplió 90 años de edad, siendo una figura importante en nuestro país, sigue brindando aportes con su sabiduría. Los temas “Cecilia y The dusty band, casi siempre se usan para iniciar el recorrido por el pueblo, además se celebra cada año con la llegada de las Fiestas Carnestolendas (llamadas en el mundo Fiestas de la carne). Este tema musical está compuesto en tonalidad menor con un ritmo muy cadencioso que invita a las mujeres a bailan con sus hermosos trajes, movimiento de caderas en el transitar de la comparsa.

Los calipsos representan chismes del pueblo, ajustes de cuenta entre algunas personas que aprovechan de cantar y expresar unos a otros los sentimientos o cuentas pendientes y así disfrutan de la fiesta. The dusty band era el nombre de la comparsa de mamarrachos liderada por Don Luis Giraud, liderizaba año tras año la comparsa en el barrio Remington acompañado de una gran multitud de personas.

Les dejo foto de tambor de calipso al final, hecho por el Maestro Willy Mayo (que desde el cielo nos sigue acompañando), publicado en el año 2018, él fue otro personaje en nuestra Música Tradicional que dejó un gran legado a nuestra historia en la fabricación de instrumentos de percusión y siendo músico insigne de la Agrupación Yuruari, una de las más importantes en el país dirigida por la Madama Clotilde Billings, la cual dejó grandes aportes en vida.

Aquí comparto la letra, la aprendí de niño asistiendo a los ensayos de la Agrupación CONVENEZUELA, en el año 1990 acompañé a mi madre que era miembro de la misma, fue una gran experiencia.

Taking advantage of the fact that in the month of February and early March, Carnival is celebrated in Venezuela, it is important to refer to Calypso as a musical genre, it is one of the most important traditional manifestations and invites you to dance and enjoy the season year after year. This musical form, has its origin in the Antilles, marking great influence on the people of Callao, Bolivar State, Delta Amacuro State, Carúpano and Guiria (Sucre State).

Today I bring you the fusion of two Calipsos, the first one called Cecilia, anonymous author and the second one is titled The dusty band, composed by Don Luis Giraud, authentic Venezuelan "calipsonian", with this calypso almost always, they start the carnival comparsa in the town of Callao, according to the Master Oswaldo Lares Soto, he told us in a meeting that these songs are part of the most popular calypsos in the State of Bolivar, invites the beginning of the comparsa to the meeting, joy and organize for the proper comparsa, filling the streets with color where the Bumbac drums are shining in the execution and the Madamas show the typical costumes dancing in an elegant and impressive way accompanied by other characters. It is sung in "patois" dialect which is a mixture of English and French with its own dialect.

It is important to highlight that Maestro Oswaldo Lares, is a great researcher of our Venezuelan Traditional Music, he gives us a sound file of calipsos that later recorded in 1983 with the Agrupación Folclórica CONVENEZUELA, being the General Director of the same, on many occasions I saw him since he was very young on stage playing the calypso drum with the joy that characterizes him, he recently turned 90 years old, being an important figure in our country, he continues to provide contributions with his wisdom. The songs "Cecilia and The dusty band, are almost always used to start the tour of the town, and it is also celebrated every year with the arrival of the Carnestolendas (called in the world Festivities of the flesh). This musical theme is composed in a minor key with a very lilting rhythm that invites women to dance with their beautiful costumes, moving their hips in the movement of the troupe.

The calypsos represent gossip of the people, settling of scores between some people who take the opportunity to sing and express to each other the feelings or pending accounts and thus enjoy the party. The dusty band was the name of the comparsa de mamarrachos led by Don Luis Giraud, who year after year led the comparsa in the Remington neighborhood accompanied by a large crowd of people.

I leave you photo of calypso drum at the end, made by Maestro Willy Mayo (who from heaven is still accompanying us), published in 2018, he was another character in our Traditional Music who left a great legacy to our history in the manufacture of percussion instruments and being insigne musician of the Yuruari Group, one of the most important in the country led by Madama Clotilde Billings, which left great contributions in life.
