I had to share this chanson. I think it is one of the best songs in the entire genre that I've heard. Brel's voice is incredibly expressive and the composition is pure gold.
Ne Me Quitte Pas ("Don't Leave Me") was written by Jacques Brel in 1959 following Brel's mistress Suzanne Gabriello leaving him on account of his suspicion that the child she was pregnant with wasn't his. Gabriello subsequently had an abortion.
Ne Me Quitte Pas is considered a masterpiece. I agree.
