Hello Hive Music people! It's been a long time since I've written here so I feel like a newbie again haha, but I really had gone through a lot of changes in my life and my inspiration was affected during the last months, but every creator has a muse that inspires them right? this time the release of the second mini album of one of my favorite artists motivated me enough to express in words how much I enjoyed her latest project and I wanted to share my opinion about this release with you, so... Let's start!
Nayeon es una integrante del grupo femenino “TWICE” que debuto oficialmente como solista el 2022 con su primer mini álbum titulado “I´M NAYEON” (un lindo juego de palabras haciendo referencia a su nombre “Im Nayeon”) cuyo title track fue la canción “Pop” que se volvió de las canciones de kpop más escuchadas de dicho año, Nayeon logro ganar premios como “La artista femenina del año” en algunas de las premiaciones más importantes de corea gracias a dicho lanzamiento, un total éxito (que incluso llego a entrar al top 200 de billboard) que sin duda elevo el estándar para sus futuros regresos, así que existía una gran incógnita entre los fans de kpop una vez que anunciaron su primer comeback en solitario… ¿Lograría Nayeon superarse a sí misma y a su gran éxito de verano? Pues la respuesta es sí, sin duda logro superarse a sí misma, y de una manera que pocos esperaron.
Su segundo mini album “NA” –conformado por un total 7 canciones las cuales revisaremos a continuación–no solo ayudo a solidificar su discografía y su carrera como solista, sino también a demostrar que tiene más que merecido el título de “La reina del verano” que logro ganar tras su debut.
Nayeon is a member of the girl group "TWICE" who officially debuted as a solo artist in 2022 with her first mini album titled "I'M NAYEON" (a cute play on words referring to her real name "Im Nayeon") whose title track was the song "Pop" which became one of the most listened kpop songs of that year, Nayeon managed to win awards such as "Female Artist of the Year" in some of the most important awards in Korea thanks to this release, a total success (which even made it into the top 200 of billboard) that undoubtedly raised the standard for her future comebacks, so there was a big question mark among kpop fans once they announced her first solo comeback? Would Nayeon manage to top herself and her summer blockbuster? Well, the answer is yes, she certainly managed to outdo herself, and in a way that few expected.
Her second mini album "NA" (made up of a total of 7 songs which we will review below) not only helped to solidify her discography and her solo career, but also to prove that she more than deserved the title of "The Queen of the Summer" that she earned after her debut.
1– ABCD
Creo que esta canción fue la mejor manera de aprovechar todo la estética y la moda de los inicios del 2000’s que ha estado en tendencia este último año, Con una obvia inspiración de artistas como Beyonce (y su éxito Crazy in love) y Britney Spears (y haciendo referencias a estas mismas en su video musical), Nayeon muestra un lado más atrevido de sí misma con una canción movida y llena de sensualidad y seguridad, con una letra donde asegura que “Cada vez que la veas caerás más profundo” y que enamorarse de sus encantos es tan sencillo como el “abcd”. ABCD es una canción energética con elementos hip-hop y con todo el encanto del pop de los 2000’s, con la cual cada vez que la escucho no puedo evitar mover mi cabeza al compás de la música. No puedo negarlo, quede totalmente enamorada de esta canción.
I think this song was the best way to take advantage of all the aesthetics and fashion of the early 2000's that has been trending this past year, with obvious inspiration from artists like Beyonce (and her hit Crazy in love) and Britney Spears (and making references to them in her music video), Nayeon shows a more daring side of herself with a moving song full of sensuality and confidence, with lyrics where she assures that "Every time you see her you'll fall deeper" and that falling in love with her charms is as simple as "abcd". ABCD is an energetic song with hip-hop elements and all the charm of 2000's pop, which every time I listen to it I can't help but move my head to the beat. I can't deny it, I totally fell in love with this song.
2– Butterflies
Ahora, mi mejor manera de describir esta canción es que es bonita, como si algo en ella tuviera brillos (no sé si se entienda lo que quiero decir pero en mi mente tiene totalmente sentido), que creo que fácilmente pudo haber estado en un álbum de su grupo, así que retrata muy bien ambas facetas de Nayeon y su encanto, tanto como solista como miembro de Twice, otras canciones que creo que van de la mano de esta en “Bloom” del álbum de Twice “With YOU-th” y “Basics” del álbum “Between 1&2” también de twice. Butterflies me gusto, agradable y sencilla y que complementa bien el resto de sus canciones y su estilo.
Now, my best way to describe this song is that it's pretty, like something about it has sparkles in it (I don't know if you get what I mean but in my mind it totally makes sense), that I think it could have easily been on an album of her group, so it portrays both sides of Nayeon and her charm very well, both as a soloist and as a member of Twice, other songs that I think go hand in hand with this one in "Bloom" from Twice's album "With YOU-th" and "Basics" from the album "Between 1&2" also from Twice. I liked Butterflies, nice and simple and it complements the rest of her songs and her style well.
3– Heaven (Feat. Sam Kim)
Ahora, realmente amo que Nayeon incluya colaboraciones en sus lanzamientos, sin duda ayuda complementar y elevar el encanto de algunas de sus canciones, como es el caso de “Heaven”, una melodía ligera y simple pero llena de encanto que logra complementarse a la perfección con la compañía de Sam Kim, ahora, es la primera vez que lo escucho y realmente me impresiono para bien, tiene una voz suave pero profunda a la vez, y que junto a Nayeon realmente me hicieron sentir en el “Cielo” mientras los escuchaba (Sobre todo esa nota alta al final fue simplemente Chef Kiss enriqueció por completo el momento). De mis favoritas sin duda.
Now, I really love that Nayeon includes collaborations in her releases, it certainly helps to complement and elevate the charm of some of her songs, as is the case of "Heaven", a light and simple melody but full of charm that manages to complement perfectly with the company of Sam Kim now, it's the first time I listen to him and he really impressed me for good, he has a soft voice but deep at the same time, and that together with Nayeon really made me feel in "Heaven" while listening to them (Especially that high note at the end was simply Chef Kiss). One of my favorites without a doubt.
4– Magic (Feat. Julie of Kiss Of Life)
Primero que nada, quiero decir que AMO Kiss of Life, son un grupo novato que han sabido ganarse su lugar entra la dura competencia actual del kpop a pesar de provenir de una compañía pequeña, y tal ha sido el impacto de este grupo de Nayeon eligió personalmente a Julie para que colaboraran juntas en esta canción mágica (Guiño). “Magic” parece una canción sacada directamente de “Future Nostalgia” de Dua Lipa, con un estilo retro pop/disco que fácilmente pudo haber dominado las playlist de todo los amantes del kpop por allá en época de pandemia cuando el estilo “retro” estaba en su apogeo, una canción divertida, movida y algo atrevida donde el encanto de Nayeon y Julie se complementan el uno al otro.
First of all, I want to say that I LOVE Kiss of Life, they are a rookie group that have managed to earn their place in today's tough kpop competition despite coming from a small company, and such has been the impact that this Nayeon group personally chose Julie to collaborate together on this magical song (wink wink). "Magic" seems like a song straight out of Dua Lipa's "Future Nostalgia", with a retro pop/disco style that could easily have dominated the playlists of all kpop lovers back in the pandemic era when the "retro" style was at its peak, a fun, upbeat and somewhat daring song where Nayeon and Julie's charm complement each other.
5–HalliGalli (Prod. By Lee ChanHyuk of AKMU)
De todas las canciones creo que esta fue la que más me sorprendió pues en el pequeño adelanto que compartieron de esta en las redes sociales me esperaba un ritmo completamente diferente al que terminamos recibiendo. Ya que AKMU es un grupo conocido por sus baladas y un estilo más RnB me esperaba que HalliGalli siguiera el mismo camino, algo relajado y dulce, lo cierto es que no me esperaba terminar con una canción más energética, más bailable, más de club (saben lo que quiero decir?) y siendo honesta fue ignorante de mi parte, porque viendo lo que Lee ChanHyuk ha producido en el pasado (sobre todo para su hermana), HalliGalli es totalmente algo que el haría. Fue una grata sorpresa, lo disfrute.
Of all the songs I think this was the one that surprised me the most because in the little preview they shared on social networks I was expecting a completely different rhythm than the one we ended up getting. Since AKMU is a group known for their ballads and a more RnB style I was expecting HalliGalli to follow the same path, something relaxed and sweet, the truth is I wasn't expecting to end up with a more energetic, more danceable, more club song (you know what I mean?) and being honest it was ignorant on my part, because seeing what Lee ChanHyuk has produced in the past (mostly for his sister), HalliGalli is totally something he would do. It was a pleasant surprise, I enjoyed it.
6–Something
Ame esta canción, sobre todo porque siempre disfruto lo que se va mas por el estilo garage / drum and bass, es algo que no puede fallar para mí. “Something” es toda una “vibra” como dirían los jóvenes de ahora, una canción melódica y pegadiza que tiene ese algo que me hace quererla escuchar más y más.
Love this song, especially because I always enjoy the garage / drum and bass style, it's something that can't go wrong for me. "Something" is a whole "vibe" as the young people of today would say (haha), a melodic and catchy song that has that something that makes me want to listen to it more and more.
7– Count It
Esta canción es dulce como el amor, y precisamente de eso habla en sus letras, de querer saber más sobre esa persona especial, y como los días se sienten al experimentar un enamoramiento, una melodía suave y algo seductora, y el final del segundo mini álbum solitario de Nayeon!
This song is sweet like love, and that's precisely what it talks about in its lyrics, about wanting to know more about that special person, and how the days feel when experiencing a crush, a soft and somewhat seductive melody, and the end of Nayeon's second solo mini album!
Definitivamente este mini álbum se ganó su puesto (y bien merecido) entre mis lanzamientos favoritos de este año, amo como Nayeon es bastante segura de la visión que quiere tener como artista y el cómo este nuevo proyecto musical se complementa muy bien con su lanzamiento pasado, creando una discografía sólida y consolidando una carrera prometedora como solista no solo en Corea, sino mundialmente. Definitely this mini album earned its place (and well deserved) among my favorite releases of this year, I love how Nayeon is quite sure of the vision she wants to have as an artist and how this new musical project complements very well with her past release, creating a solid discography and consolidating a promising career as a solo artist not only in Korea, but worldwide.
