Sometimes the reason why some of us think we are better than others when it comes to skills is because we’ve refused to go out and see others display their skills.
God cannot deposit everything in one man, I will like you to keep that in your head, and the moment you start understanding this the better you come to understand the concept of talent as a whole.
If you check around well, you will discover that so many people envy another man’s skill not because they are not skillful also. The main source of the envy is; “HOW I WISH THIS SKILL IS MINE”.
Look at Nigeria music life; it is a very good example of what I am talking about.
How can a skillful instrumentalist/vocalist be beefing another of their same kind, using the excuse of saying another of their kind is so disrespectful.
See, God cannot deposit all the skills in just you alone. Look at the story of all the prophet in
the bible, God anointed each and every one of the prophet but the anointing differs, but does that
mean each of them are not anointed?
Yes, they are all anointed, but each of them has their
uniqueness.
As a musician, why not work on having your uniqueness than rather filling your creative mind with envy and jealousy? You are a product of your mind, whatever you create in your mind, you can establish it.
Base on your manner of approach to things I can be able to tell how sound your mind is. Your mindset produce your real self. If you keep harbouring jealousy and envy in your mind, you focus more on people issues instead of yourself.
Shame to any instrumentalist who keeps seeing his/herself more special than everyone else.
We are all skillful, but not everyone is unique. Uniqueness is born out of creativity. If you are
doing what everyone are doing you can never be unique.
Your sound should be different from that of another drummer. There is something called trade
mark in business. Trade mark is a unique thing you use in your business that everyone knows
you as, when they see your product they don’t need anyone to tell them that the product is yours,
the same applies to drumming also, every drummer should have a trade mark.
When someone listen to a recording, even without anyone telling them who played the drums in the recording they should be able to know that you were the one who played the drums. It is very important you have your sound. Your sound is your trade mark, stop trying to sound like someone else, sit down to bring out your own uniqueness.
When Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted, Elisha said “he want a double portion of his anointing”. Elisha knew he was anointed but he knows that what can exempt him from other prophet of his time is if his anointing works in a new dimension.
Give everyone their drums and let them know what to use it for. Drumming is also about your interpretation of the drums itself, not anyone's interpretation.
Your interpretation is your unique sound, it's your uniqueness and your uniqueness is what differentiate you from the multitude of drummers.
Sunnie snare has his sound, same with Mosugu, same with Daniel Patani, and same
with Jerome Osang. The reason why these drummers have value in Nigeria drumming sector is
because of their unique sound. Find your unique sound!
Being skillful in music is not enough, being skillful and unique at the same time is the main deal and it can only be achieved via creativity which will bring out your uniqueness.
