I can attest to the fact that it has never been easy learning drums all by myself or even learning the drums with a teacher. It has never been easy; anyone that tells you that it is easy learning it is lying!
There is these stage in drumming, if you are a beginner you must pass through it, every beginner most pass through this stage one way or the other and this stage is the stage I tag “The Choice Stage”.
“The choice stage” happens to beginners. During that period a beginner drummer find it hard to improve, that period it seems like the beginner is practicing and it is like it is not having any effect on his or her playing.
As a beginner drummer even with drum tutors you are not improving, even with online drum tutors you are still not improving, during these period two things comes your mind; (1. Dump drumming and move on with your life 2. Continue and discover a way to learn). So you are left to make a choice.
This Choice stage is the period every drummer makes a choice and it is that choice that
determines whether a drummer will improve or dump drumming. Peradventure you make a choice of continuing drumming; generally speaking, you are telling yourself that “You want to discover a way to learn”.
You have tried personal drum tutors but it failed, you have tried online tutors but it failed also, you have tried watching drum videos but it failed, but do you know that those things you have tried and they failed doesn’t mean they were teaching you the wrong thing?
They were not scam! The problem is actually you. You are the reason you have not improved. You have failed to discover the best way to teach yourself drumming, you want your personal drum tutor to teach you drumming, you want your online drum tutor to teach you drumming, and they are teaching
you the drumming, but how many times have you sit down to use what they taught you to teach
yourself drums?
You depend on only the practice section you and your drum tutor normally have and you think you will learn that way? If you have not discovered the best way to teach yourself drumming, no one is qualified to teach you drumming. Let this stick to your head from today henceforth.
Your teachers teach you what you need to grow; it is your duty to make use of what you have been taught to learn more and more things in that aspect in drumming. The teachings of your online and personal drum tutor is not enough to improve you, your hard work in using what they have taught you in learning more and more things in that aspect in drumming is what will improve you.
Let me use a farmer as an example:
A farmer has two sons, when his sons become of age he decided to teach them how to farm. The
farmer specializes on farming beans so he taught his sons how to cultivate it.
One of his sons learnt how to cultivate the beans while another of his son learnt how to cultivate beans and also discovered a way of making use of the beans to make akara, moi moi (beans cake) and other stuff.
Most beginner drummers fall under the category of the first farmer son who only learnt how to cultivate beans. Drum tutors will teach you how to cultivate just like how the farmer taught his sons how to cultivate but remember that the farmer didn’t teach his sons how they can make use of the beans they were cultivating into something that can be eaten.
Now it is your own duty to learn how to cultivate and also learn how to use what you cultivated to make music/drumming.
So do not stop in learning how to cultivate. When you stop here, things will start looking as if what you have been learning isn’t improving you.
Yeah learning continues.... We can never stop learning and improving.
