Greetings, Hiveans. 🤠 Recently I playback nothing but Depeche Mode, so I decided to introduce you to some of my faves - not the well-known album versions, but remixes.
Back in early 90-es, I was a huge DM fan. I tried to collect everything I can, especially all the singles and remixed versions. (I still keep compact cassettes with those recordings in my parents house). Today I dont believe it to be an urgent stuff anymore, haha! just a marketing product, sometiimes good, sometimes bad. Noting more! Well... precious thing for a collectioneers... whatever. A few more sidesteps before I unpack the actual songs.
'Violator' LP did not make a fan of me in 1990, as I already was! 'The songs of Faith and Devotion' LP arrived in 1993 exactly when I was on the peak of my obsession. And long awaiting for the next album 'Ultra' wilted my love a lot (also worth to mention that by the time 'Ultra' arrived, I discovered - there are so much great bands out there! and other artists have pushed DM to the sidelines a bit). And when the 'Exciter' saw the light of a day... (I have to check wiki - absolutely cant say when it happened!) - in 2001 - I felt nothing, it leaved me totally unimpressed, I have crossed out myself of the band's fan base, cause their current music became a mainstream so much! no difference at all from other good bands, no vibe, no magic. Just marketing. Okay, that was the lyrical prologue and the necessary exposition. Now let's move on to today's tunes.
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (Ricki Tik Tik Mix)
Copies, cover versions are often unimaginative rubbish (well, let's say: most of the time!). Such creators use one feature of arrangement, or musical style, push it and base all their success solely on it. Thats ridiculous! Exceptions are quite rare. It's impossible to beat and outdo such a hit as 'Enjoy the silence' - but I really prefer this version to original one! The explanation is simple: I'm too tired of the huge saccharine hit that has been playing from every iron for the last 30 years, thats why I prefer an alternative version. It sounds more fresh and dance-floor to me. Oh, forgot to mention: tis is a stunning work of Daniel Miller and Phil Legg. (PPS - now I know the origins of Devotional version backing tape!)
Depeche Mode - In Your Room (Apex Mix)
I could talk about this tune on and on! Lets say in brief: in my university years, i tried to learn guitar by playing not only the Beatles but also Depeche mode - including this particular song. As Martin Gore talked out, 'In Your Room' could be a bigger hit single than 'I Feel You' [but it didnt, due to its length and the controversial video, among other reasons]. It's six and a half minutes long! could be edited down, but length was part of its beauty, as Gore stated.
I love the Apex remix version as much as the studio version... its creator is not a random person in the music industry, maybe his name - Brian Eno - means something to you?.. According to my standards this track is among electronic music masterpieces of all time, among the Top-50. 'The Songs of Faith and Devotion' is not my fave DM LP, as it marked some very dark and dramatic pages of band history; also the album is very uneven for me personally. But I can't deny that all of its songs are masterpieces. Havent heard it yet? Go go go!
For the studio version, check official video directed by Anton Corbijn:
Actually I dont like said videoclip too much, I found it too eclectic and chaotic with no storytelling and a mish-mush of very different visuals. But... it was created like that for a reason! Corbijn just tried to fit in as much references to other DM musical videos as possible! Remember - a woman wearing sunglasses and skimpy leather outfit from "Policy of Truth"; a woman dressed as Dave Gahan, wearing a pinstripe suit, sunglasses, and a wig ("I Feel You"), bird costume ("Walking in My Shoes"), folks dressed as clowns ("Halo"), woman wearing a king crown, holding the folding chair while walking in the road ("Enjoy the Silence"), woman wearing cowboy hat like members did ("Personal Jesus"), tea drinking like in "Never Let Me Down Again". It was sort of an inner joke, a message to the fans, a retrospective of the work he had done with Depeche Mode.
Live version of the song - performed during the Devotional world tour - was boosted with very simple but very powerful videofeed; portraits of four young women staring at you, with eye contact and some enigmatic attitude written on their faces. i was forever captivated with Corbijn's artistic trick! Eye contact does matter, hehe.
Depeche Mode - Fly on the Windscreen (Death mix)
Gareth Jones, famous English music producer and engineer, created this remix. He contributed a lot to DM classic albums, and this is a brilliant example of his sound signature.
Hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday106 | 107 | 108 | 109 | 110 | 111 | 112 | 113 | 114 | 115 | 116 | 118 | 121 | 122 | 123 | 124 | 125 | 126 | 127 | 128 | 129 | 131 | 140 | 141 | 142 | 143 | 144 | 146 | 147 | 148 | 149 | 151 | 152 | 154 | 156 | 157 | 165 | 167 | 168 | 170 | 171 | 172 | 188 | 189 | 190 | 191 | 193 challenge run by @ablaze. In Your Room is perhaps my favourite song by the band, and I have never heard these other versions. I prefer the original, with that dark crazy sound at the start!
O!! I could not even imagine it san be someone's fave DM song. Nice! For me it is in the top but definitely not the one. But I am purely subjective, and had a lot of personal imprints.
Clean / Nothing / To have and to hold Spanish taster / Ice Machine / In your Room are in my list. 🐈
The darkest I have ever heard them, I am not familiar with their album tracks (probably missing some great stuff).
Haven't heard Depeche Mode in years!
Ha! Me too... I play them very very very rarely. But this week - belongs to them solely. I miss those boys (and my youth silly days too, lets face the truth!) Thank you for support and a line back. Glad to share my nostalgia with you!

Ohhhh man the three tunes is for Tuesday or Thursday?
I have my post ready but I am not sure, for this reason I do not publish it today.
Well I do the next time.
!BEER and !PIZZAofc its Tuesday! ... #threetunetuesday is correct tag to use. I just cant keep it on a regular basis, and share my #ttt posts when I can write it, not necessarily on Tuesday. Yesterday in the evening it came to the extremum: my internet connection in the evening disappeared like a morning mist, without a trace. I could not nor publish a post, neither curate... the only option was go to sleep :P
