It took me a little while to warm up to this song. Perhaps it took me some time becoming 'jaded' before realizing this song contained some powerful lyrics. Whatever it was, I think this song sends a powerful message. It very obviously tells the story of a narrator who has fallen in love with a beautiful woman who is extremely toxic. And I want to emphasize that the narrator has fallen in love, because the disdain and resent he is expressing throughout the song could only possibly come from someone who has loved and hurt and loathed as the narrator describes.
It kind of sucks how it feels like the most beautiful women who have entered my short life have often felt like the most toxic women to associate with. And it's not that you don't care about this person... far from that. I mentioned before that these feelings can ONLY come from someone who has felt love. I think the narrator of the song is conflicted primarily because he cannot quite fathom what it is about this woman that makes him love her. Part of me imagines it is the beauty she possesses which he continually refers back to, but in a way that feels too artificial and simplistic to describe the wave of emotions that feel like love. For me it's in a lot of ways how inviting their love is, and how easy it feels to imagine this person as a piece of your life... in a lot of ways it IS the little things that make you feel like you are in love. All of that aside, he also is able to recognize the toxicity that comes along with loving her, which I think is one of the hardest things to recognize in a moment. Blinders are a real thing, but when the realization about a situation you are engulfed in becomes clear, it becomes a very sobering feeling. For a while it becomes tolerable to put up with the toxicity, but then the fog clears, or in my case, spring comes around... and you realize what has been going on the whole time and how unbearable a situation can feel.
The whole song in a way feels like the narrator is pleading with himself, and reminding himself of all of the reasons that he has put this distance between himself and his former lover. That internal struggle has become the lyrics for a song that describes how it feels to stare into the eyes of a woman who you will always love for some reason.
I really don't like the word 'bitch'. I think it's tasteless and extremely derogatory. While I don't always think it is tied this closely, in a way - it equates a woman with the likes of a dog, and something about that just feels incredibly wrong. With that being said, I cannot think of another word that would carry the same poetic justice and meaning that it plays in this song. And I think in a way, my disdain for the word itself, plays into one of the reasons the message feels even more powerful.
Regardless of my emotions and feelings about the song, I really enjoy the melody of the tune. A simple song, only 4 chords really, but it has in my opinion, the perfectly simplistic accents on the D and the Am chords.
