Hello, music lovers! π΅
Today, I have something else in mind. Yes, old music, too, but the story is different. My younger son and I had commitments in Koper, so we drove there from home. Then my son asked me, "What will we listen to today?"
What would you like to listen to?
Something progressive.
I was surprised because he is more into rap, hip-hop, and trap, which young people listen to nowadays. On #threetunestuesday, I go back to listening to music growing up and absorbing the music I had access to.
Well, we found something on the phone: the album Fear Of Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree.
He liked it.
For those not (yet) familiar with #threetunetuesday or #ttt - these are tags you need to set when you post.
It's a music initiative started by @ablaze, and with his words, the jist is as follows:
Every Tuesday I'm going to share 3 songs that I like to listen to and I invite your feedback in the comments below. Better still, why not have a blast of your own Three Tune Tuesday and mention me in the post and I'll come and find the post and upvote it. If you could also use #threetunetuesday tag that would be great, as that is what I use when sifting through all the entries every Wednesday. It'll be a sweet way for us all to discover new music. You'll also be in with a chance of winning the reward.
Porcupine Tree is an English band formed in 1987. First, it was a solo project by musician Steven Wison, who wrote the music, lyrics, and melodies. Later, it became a real band with all the musicians working together. Throughout their first decade of activity, they achieved a kind of cult status with music critics and listeners, working outside the mainstream and being described in music magazines as "the most important band you'd never heard of."
Their music has evolved over time. A more psychedelic and experimental sound dominated their early albums, while later, they developed a more structured sound with touches of progressive rock and metal. Frontman Wilson has described their music as "melancholic progressive rock through which we let our frustrations out."
They went on hiatus from 2010 to 2021 but are now playing again. They have released eleven studio albums and many more live recordings and compilations (21, I counted).
Their songs are not hits in the classical sense but musically complex compositions, usually longer than the average song on mainstream media.
I confess I haven't listened to their entire opus, but here I've selected a few songs that have stuck in my mind, and I'm listening to them.
Porcupine Tree - Nine Cats
The song is from their debut album, 1992's On the Sunday of Life... When I first listened to this song, it reminded me of Pink Floyd's daydreams and mysticism and the psychedelic fantasies of Alice in Wonderland. Dream fragments that everyone can interpret in their way.
Porcupine Tree - Trains
Trains is the opening song from their seventh album, In Absentia, released in 2002. It is characterized by its extraordinary melodic and emotional quality and excellent guitar interludes, from acoustic guitars to heavy metal riffs.
It begins from a naive child's perspective, revealing transience, longing, and loss.
Porcupine Tree - Start Of Something Beautiful
The song is from eight album, Deadwing, from 2005. This is a recording from a concert in Chicago, 2005, for me personally, great sound, top production, even from a lesser recording you can hear all the instruments accurately.
The song is about the beginning of something new and beautiful, but under the surface there are various darker interpretations and irony.
As a bonus, there's a clip from the 2022 Amsterdam concert. Fear of a Blank Planet is from their ninth album of the same name, released in 2007.

That's all for today, thank you for your attention.
I hope what I'm sharing is enjoyable for others, too, because then it makes sense. This is my 69th post for #threetunetuesday, which @ablaze started.

Great job and you so much talented.
I'm a big fan since a friend of a friend who knew Steven Wilson got us tickets for a Porcupine Tree gig. I'll be seeing him again live in May. I've performed some of his songs, but none of my friends know who he is, apart from @slobberchops. He ought to be much more famous.
!BEER
Porcupine Tree is underrated, I think.
Definitely. Steven Wilson is always doing cool stuff. I just got the new album.
