Forest Flower by The Charles Lloyd Quartet was recorded live in 1965 at The Monterey Jazz Festival. Lloyd is on tenor sax and flute with Keith Jarrett on piano, Cecil McBee on bass and and Jack DeJohnette on drums. I heard them in the late sixties live in Cincinnati Ohio with Ravi Shankar also on the bill. The song Forest Flower has two parts - Sunrise and Sunset. Together they span over 18 minutes of music. The group had been together about a year when this was recorded. The chords and harmony for this opus were very modern but at the same time very accessible to the listener. The piano playing of Keith Jarrett is wonderful (at times he is actually plucking the piano strings). There is plenty of time for everyone to stretch out and stretch out they do. At times they really push the boundaries of what was going on in jazz at the time. As abstract as the song may become at times there is an arc to the solos and an uncanny sensitivity to the soloists from the rhythm section. I've listened to this album for 50 years and it always lightens my mood with its adventurous and inspired musicianship.
