RE: The Cover Band Has A Name Now (update)

in Music2 years ago

That sounds like a fun setlist. I've played a lot of covers with bands, but only done my own songs on my own. I know on the pub circuit you can get audiences who just want to hear stuff they know and it can be tough to get an audience for your own songs. But if you can get paid for playing whilst having fun then that's good. My band has a couple of gigs coming up that are all covers, but a very different style with songs going back almost 100 years.

Rock on!

That sounds interesting man, we have an idea to learn I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire, which I think is close to 100 years old at this stage.

That's the thing man, I've been playing with a band doing originals for so long and we've earned barely anything doing it. It's more the love of it that's kept us going and the small crowd we've accumulated over the years.

Doing the covers now though is great to learn all these songs and it would be great to earn something from it, even if it was small.

My band mostly plays for fun so we will do the tunes we enjoy. Some of us have written songs, but not worked them into the band set yet. They have to fit our general theme of swing jazz, but then we do stretch that a bit. I do have an ambition to write some rock songs for a band though.

That's pretty cool, I love the swing kind of stuff, my uncle plays double bass in a band called the swing cats, they're really cool. Yeah that makes sense wanting to keep the genre one style, we've got one original and another we're playing around with. We might include it into the set when doing the covers, but it'll depend on the crowd.

With the other band I'm in Dangerous Dave and the Side Effects we only play originals which are mainly punk and ska kind of stuff, it's a lot of fun doing originals. But, doing some good covers is fun too, especially while playing for people. I've noticed the reaction to the covers can tend to get a better reaction from people, but when getting a compliment about an original song it feels like it means more or something.
