ThreeTuneTuesday - Julieta Venegas: Feeling in Mexican

in Music9 days ago (edited)

To be honest, I typically don't tend to like the music of popular female singers going on about the topics of relationships and the like. Not that there's anything wrong about it, I just don't happen to fall into their target audience. However, sometimes a song tends to capture my attention, I recognize a sound I enjoyed, or find a particular aspect somehow relatable. Before soon, the music starts to grow on me, particularly if this happens various times with the same artist. This is precisely what happened with Julieta Venegas, making me want to share my three favorite songs of her in this week's #ThreeTuneTuesday challenge.

Andar Conmigo

I was passing through the Mauerpark in Berlin one hot Summer weekend, when a familiar tune caught my ear. One guy was playing it on the keyboard, singing to it in German: "Sag mir doch bitte, willst du mit mir gehen, oh-oh-oh!" While the words sounded truly strange at the moment, I was certain that I knew song from somewhere else. It didn't take me long to figure out from where: Mexico! And after a very brief search I managed to identify the artist exactly, get the original lyrics, and watch the video. This is when I realized, this lady is not that bad, actually, at least this one song of hers, which I had heard countless times in various places. Soon I was singing it myself, in Spanish and in German. Sure, it deals with finding the perfect partner, but her style can be equally appropriate for wearing a cowboy hat while chugging tequilas in a dive bar to enjoying an extended Sunday brunch on your balcony.

Limón y Sal

This is another song that has passed my ears a bunch of times before I actually paid fully attention to it. In fact, it was a friend of mine who explained what had inspired Julieta Venegas to write the lyrics. It's about her dog! While at first I was a bit skeptical, it was worth paying attention to the lyrics. Sure, one may simply imagine them to be about some guy she has known, and they do make sense. However, once you apply them to a dog, you realize that they fit perfectly. As such, "You don't say anything romantic about the sunset." is certainly not due to a lack of feelings. Keeping this in mind, the music video becomes particularly interesting with this silent film style werewolf story.

El Sol No Regresa

Okay, first of all, this song is NOT by Julieta Venegas. So what is it doing here in this post? Well, it's because up until a few minutes ago I was convinced it was by her! The similarity is style is uncanny, and in fact many of my friends (as well as people online) have mistakenly claimed it was Julieta Venegas, while actually it is La Quinta Estación. The lyrics are a bit melancholy, describing bad times and how difficult it can be to overcome them. The video, however, is a masterpiece recorded in the center of Mexico City, in a stereotypical sun drenched light scheme. What I particularly like about it, is how the musicians happen to pass by, just like random pedestrians. The combination of accordion, electric guitars, and trumpet give it an additionally great Mexican feel, though the band itself is from Spain. This may be another reason, why so many people think it's by Julieta Venegas.

Okay, so after writing this post, I have to admit, sometimes I do like female musicians singing about heartbreak and stuff. Especially if the music catches my attention for whatever reason. I hope you enjoyed your first impression of Julieta Venegas (and/or Quinta Estación), and are inspired to find more of their music.

My favorite song by Julieta Venegas

This movie left a huge impact on me, way before I even first visited Mexico. The song, however, passed me by, and even the name of the artist remained elusive to me until recently. In fact, I didn't even know she made a song for the film's soundtrack. Thanks for sharing it!

Sent a discord DM proxy mexican! Hahaha

Thanks for letting me know here, otherwise I may never have seen it.
