Good day, Hive.
I can finally share the project that I have been working on for some time.
The FerguSeavey Telebastard.
One fine day, I was able to play my roommate's Jim Root Telecaster. I had never really played an electric guitar before. I know this is crazy, since I have been playing the guitar for 20 years. I had always been a rhythm strumming acoustic guitar player to accompany myself as I sing. Playing the mandolin broke me out of the cage of chord strumming, and it really prepared me for the electric guitar.
On this particular day, my roommate plugged a guitar into an amp and handed it to me. Because of the mandolin, I instinctively started playing some jigs and reels. The sound coming from the amp changed something inside of me. I played a Les Paul and Burns guitar before he handed me the Telecaster. I kind of became possessed by that guitar.
I played for hours on end, unable to put it down. A whole new world opened up to me. I knew I needed an electric guitar. My roommate happened to have a Telecaster-style guitar body and he suggested that we build one.
Here is the body with the inspiration... the Jim Root Telecaster.
I have never even thought about building an electric guitar before, but as it turns out, it is really fun!
My recent woodworking skills came in handy, and I was happy to return to my table in the garage to do some sanding and carving. We needed extra room inside the guitar to fit the 9 volt battery that is necessary with EMG pickups. I was not afraid to use my carving knives to accomplish that.
We initially tried to paint it white, but the paint didn't come out, so I sanded it down and painted it again.
Then it was time to add a box full of parts!
I insisted on locking tuners, like the Jim Root Telecaster, which I have named Excalibur. Then I learned about self trimming, locking tuners and almost fainted. I got some for my guitar, and they are the coolest things on Earth.
There have been some issues, as the neck was warped from hanging on a peg in a guitar shop for years with nothing attached to it. There is some buzz in some of the frets, but string tension is slowly bending it back into shape.
I am making electric versions of some of my songs, and learning how to make the sounds that I have always heard in my head.
Here is the living room debut of the FerguSeavey Telebastard.
May this be the beginning of 1000 new songs!
Peace and long life, Hive.
Great work!! 🎸 👏👏👏
ooh oohh... you got the bug too... there is no turning back now brother
I'm already eyeing up one of my roommate's guitars that needs some fixing.
I want to learn what you know @meno! If I lived near you, I would ask to be your apprentice.
This is DOPE! I love that you took matters in your own hands and built a guitar of your own. It's awesome to create your own things! We should totally jam out with your new guitar the next time I'm in MN. I sing and you play or some shit lol
I am down.
Hey this is awesome!
It's also exciting, since the pickups are electro magnets. I get to work with them after all!
No way. 😀
Amazing 😍

Thanks @dzoji!
This is such a nice story to read. Always interesting to read/hear people's experiences discovering new things. And how wonderful such a discovery can lead to a whole new passion. Well, it's not completely new for you, since it is still the passion of playing the guitar and recording tracks/songs, but with a new instrument {SMILEY} Super nice you also took the effort to create your own electric guitar! Will you create more?
I currently want to re-build my roommates guitar. In the spring I will probably make an electric guitar body and go from there. The garage is too cold at the moment though...
Can imagine! The cold I mean. Winter time is to dream up all the things we want to do when Spring and Summer is there for us again 😉
NJOY your guitar and all the plans you are making to create more instruments 🙇
for an amateur guitar player like me, if i be able to build one one thing i'd say would be "finally i can rest in peace".
i did guitar repair years a go, and string buzz on certain fret is maybe mos common thing to occur.
well, congrats for telebastard, lol. good luck on the 1K coming songs \m/
The string buzz has been a problem. It is fun to learn how to build and fix the guitars. Someday, maybe I will build a neck and it will have no buzz.
Wow look at you now building a guitar! From wooden thingies to guitar how cool!
Thanks @diabolika!
Nice!!
Wow I have to show my kid this post, he will be very excited, he and I are restoring a guitar but not to this level, we just repaired the neck and put the strings, since he is starting to play the acoustic guitar, to later play the electric.
I hope you have fun restoring the acoustic. I want to build an acoustic guitar too, but building an acoustic body is way beyond my skill level at this point.
It is true, we could say that it is an art, the soundbox I have seen that have various forms, I recently learned that some come without a part that allows better approach the arm to the strings.
I hope you have fun restoring the acoustic. I want to build an acoustic guitar too, but building an acoustic body is way beyond my skill level at this point.
This is amazing friend!!!❤️
Thank you, @artedellavita:D
Xo
Wow this is so so creative🙂
Cheers to more creative ideas, the world is your oyster mate @tarotbyfergus 👍
Well done. Telecasters are cool. Have fun with it.
!PIZZA
Thanks @steevc. I have become quite a fan of Telecasters. Also of EMG pickups!
Awesome man! Is that a solid block of maple you used? Well done and enjoy it!
I just learned that it is alder. The body was already shaped, but I am looking forward to making one from a chunk of wood.
Alder is another great hardwood. A little darker than maple.
I also learned that it is 2 pieces.
I gifted $PIZZA slices here:
