Yesterday I shared one of my commemorative silver tokens that came from Las Vegas, Nevada. That got me thinking about just how much the city has changed over the years since I first visited. To be honest, it almost doesn't look the same anymore. If it seems that different to me today, it would have to be almost a different location altogether for Las Vegas legends like Elvis Presley and the Rat Pack. It used to be a classy city back when it was run by the mafia, all things change, that is the one guarantee that life offers us.

One of the few things that hasn't changed is the iconic Las Vegas sign. I have been to Vegas more times than I can count over the years and seen this sign over and over. Unlike most tourists I never stopped to take a picture though! It is nice to see one thing remains constant in a city of entertainment and chaos. I was born far too late to see the city back when the Rat Pack was around. For those unfamiliar with them, the were legendary singers and entertainers that were synonymous with Las Vegas. Men like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, and always donned in tuxedos.
So today my Three Tune Tuesday will celebrate the days of Vegas past with three of these great performers, and a surprise slightly newer one as well. Before I get going I just wanted to say thanks to @ablaze for starting and continuing to sponsor this fun weekly event. For those who don't yet participate feel free to jump in and share a few of your favorite tunes, just use the tags #threetunetuesday or #ttt. And it's never a bad idea to do a shoutout to @ablaze just the be safe!
Let's kick of the fun with Dean Martin, a true entertainment legend!
Dean Martin

Often referred to as the "King of Cool", he was one of the most popular singers, comedians, and entertainers of the the mid 1900's. He started his career along side comedy great Jerry Lewis, then in the late 1950's and early 1960's forged close friendships with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. They became known as the "Rat Pack" that frequently performed together in Las Vegas. Later he had his own television show for years, I even recall seeing some reruns when I was a kid. The song I chose for today is one of his best known and fun songs: "Ain't That A Kick In The Head"

This New Jersey native leaned early that life on the docks wasn't for him and pursued a musical career instead. He too, is one of the most popular entertainers of the mid 1900's and one of the best selling recording artists of all time. One interesting fact I learned this morning is that although of the right age to serve in the military in World War 2, he was classified as medically unfit for service due to a perforated eardrum. However, later it was revealed that they considered him psychiatrically unfit due to emotional instability. Just goes to show no one is perfect! It didn't stop his legendary career as a singer and entertainer... Here's a classic: "Fly Me To The Moon":
Sammy Davis Jr.

And another member on of the Rat Pack, also one of the best entertainers of the mid 1900's. He lost his left eye while driving along Route 66 on his way to Las Vegas from Los Angeles in an auto accident. It didn't slow his career in the least, and he often incorporated it into his humor. Despite facing racial prejudice he succeeded in becoming one of the top entertainers in the United States. Something I learned today is that he converted to Judaism, feeling they understood the prejudices he faced in his youth.
Once while golfing with comedy great Jack Benny, Benny asked him what was his handicap? Of course referring to gold handicap, a measure of gold ability. Davis answered "Handicap? Talk about a handicap. I'm a one eye Negro who's Jewish". It became one of his signature comments. Nowadays a comedian couldn't get away with a comment like that!
He had an amazing voice and produced multiple hits throughout his career, and he was really funny to boot! Here's his hit song "That Old Black Magic":
That wraps up the Rat Pack. These day legendary Vegas performers are those who do stints or residencies in the city. I am a big fan of heavy metal music, just in case somehow some of you missed that somehow... One band that has made a name for themselves in Las Vegas is the legendary 1980's band Mötley Crüe. Although they aren't the Rat Pack, they are a great band! I was reminded of these guys yesterday when Vince Neil's private jet crashed in Scottsdale, Arizona. He wasn't on the plane, talk about luck!
Mötley Crüe
This Los Angeles band has been around since 1981. Often known as the bad boys of rock due to their antics and drug/alcohol abuse, somehow they all managed to stay alive until this day. However, guitarist Mick Mars left the band a few years back stating medical reasons, but band infighting had a part to play as well. But they are too now becoming a Las Vegas band, lead singer Vince Neil used to live there as well. Here's "Dr. Feelgood":

Thank you for the trip down memory lane @thebighigg, I love All of these golden oldies - Mötley Crüe a tad too crazy for me😉
They were a crazy band, now they're considered classic rock. I must be getting old! I've always loved the Rat Pack music, back when there was class in entertainment!

@nupulse, I sent you anSounds like Las Vegas has definitely changed over the years....
I still need to put a visit to this city that never sleeps on my bucket list!😇😀
I would to have loved to have seen it back in the early 60's, back when it was "classy". Then again, people used to dress up to fly, not anymore...
I remember years ago a coworker rented a tuxedo to go to Las Vegas!😇
I don't suppose that's the norm now Lol...🙄
Not anymore... The days of class are long gone, I blame the Kardashians and Paris Hilton personally!
Times do change it’s kind of sad…..
Did you ever go to the Vince Neil bar when it was in circus circus? My buddy did when we were there last time. Great songs there. I always loved dean and frank.
I did, and then the Sammy Hagar restaurant in the airport! I love Vegas, it's such a fun place. Just wish I was richer and younger to enjoy it all the more!
I agree on both accounts!
