Greetings, Hivers. Welcome to this second round of Originals vs Covers. This week I want to liven up your Friday with a little party mood and I bring you an immortal disco classic. Would you like to participate and tell us which version you like the most?
Saludos, Hivers.
It is the iconic song I Will survive, written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris and originally recorded in 1978 by the Soul and Disco diva, Gloria Gaynor. Its melody is a reference of the sound of the 70's; its lyrics a hymn to the strength that broken hearts get to overcome a separation. The resounding success of the song (it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy, 1980, for Best Recording of the Year), led Gaynor to record it also in Spanish, becoming a pioneer among Anglo-Saxon singers who recorded in that languaje, a trend that would be successfully followed by the group ABBA.
Among the most famous covers of this classic are those of Diana Ross in the 80s, Selena's live version to open her concert at the Huoston Astrodome in 1995, Demi Lovato's for the soundtrack of the animated film Angry Birds, in 2016 or Celia Cruz's free translation of her salsa classic. However, we have chosen for today an alternative vision that, in our opinion, brings new airs to the song with its arrangements, preserving the essence of its message through the lyrics and the hilarious video. We are talking about the version of the indie rock band Cake, included in their 1996 album Fashion Nuggets.
Tell us: Which one is your favorite and why? Leave us your answer in the comments and you'll be entered to win a surprise gift. While we really liked @isaomaroon's answer to last week's Round-Up, as many of you already know, this brilliant and very pretty writer and I are family, which is why I shouldn't give her the token prize. So the winner of 1 HBD for his comment to the First Round of Originals vs Covers is (drum roll to accentuate the expectation): @charliesmith11.
As a musical bonus for Spanish speakers and rumberos, I'll leave this salsa version of the Queen of son and guaracha Celia Cruz over here. See you next time Hivers. Happy weekend and long live the Music!
