This is when the double bass takes on the leading role and stages it magnificently.

Despite being known as a multi-instrumentalist, Adam Ben Ezra, who was born in Tel Aviv in 1982, has focussed his creative energy on the double bass in particular over the past ten years. During this time, he has managed to raise the instrument, which is notable for its volume but certainly not for its frequent use on stage, to an entirely new level. While other jazz bassists switched increasingly to the electric bass guitar from the 1970s onwards, Ezra took on the sonorous monster and moved it from the background into the spotlight.

Obwohl als Multiinstrumentalist bekannt, konzentrierte der 1982 in Tel Aviv geborene Adam Ben Ezra in den vergangenen zehn Jahren seine Schaffenskraft insbesondere auf den Kontrabass. In diesem Zeitraum schaffte er es, das Instrument, welches zwar durch das Volumen, aber mit Sicherheit nicht durch den häufigen Einsatz auf der Bühne auffällt, auf ein komplett neues Niveau zu heben. Während andere Bassisten im Jazz ab den 70er Jahren mehr und mehr auf die elektrische Bassgitarre umstiegen, nahm sich Ezra dem klangvollen Monstrum an und rückte es aus dem Hintergrund ins direkte Rampenlicht.

The review notes the following about the recently released album ‘Heavy Drops’: ‘Adam Ben Ezra fascinates not only with his innovative compositions, but also with his unique sound. Despite the minimalist line-up of two musicians — apart from guest musician Omer Mor, who plays on one track — the album unfolds an almost orchestral fullness of sound in many places. The music is expressive and melodic, the themes complex but clearly defined, while the improvisation intensifies the atmosphere of each piece. In terms of sound, the album combines sophisticated jazz structures with modern, energetic themes and rhythms.’

Since the beginning, there have always been a few albums that have surpassed what is generally considered to be a particularly good work of music. Two of the best examples are Miles Davis' perennial masterpiece “Kind of Blue” and the live recording of pianist Keith Jarrett's world-famous “Cologne Concert”. I would not be at all surprised if Adam Ben Ezra's ‘Heavy Drops’ were to be mentioned in this context in a few years' time. There is no question that this brilliant work will conquer the jazz charts.

Es gab schon immer ein paar wenige Alben, die über das hinausragten, was allgemein als ein besonders gutes Werk bezeichnet wird. Als beste Beispiele gelten hier das immerwährende Kunstwerk von Miles Davis »Kind of Blue« und der Live-Mitschnitt des weltberühmten »Köln-Konzert« des Pianisten Keith Jarrett. Es würde mich überhaupt nicht überraschen, wenn in ein paar Jahren die »Heavy Drops« von Adam Ben Ezra in diesem Zusammenhang ihre Erwähnung finden würde. Dass dieses Meisterwerk die Jazz-Charts erobern wird, steht ohnehin außerfrage.

Ben Ezra used ten of his own compositions, took drummer Michael Olivera into the recording studio with him, and the line-up for the recording of the album was quickly finalised. At sixteen, Ben Ezra taught himself to play bass. His ambition and motivation were fuelled by the playing of Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius and Bobby McFerrin. With such idols, it seems no easy task to achieve a similarly high level of musical ability on this instrument. Since he didn't seem to be quite sure whether he could measure up to these jazz greats, he initially moved into the Funk and Latin American genres.

Ezra griff auf zehn Eigenkompositionen zurück, nahm den Schlagzeuger Michael Olivera mit ins Tonstudio und so schnell stand die Besetzung für das Einspielen des Albums fest. Das Bassspiel brachte sich Ben Ezra mit sechzehn selbst bei. Seinen Ehrgeiz und die Motivation tankte er aus dem Spiel von Chick Corea, Jaco Pastorius und Bobby McFerrin. Bei solchen Vorbildern scheint es kein leichtes Unterfangen, eine ähnlich hohe musikalische Fähigkeit auf diesem Instrument zu erlangen. Da er sich nicht ganz sicher zu sein schien, ob er sich mit diesen Größen des Jazz messen konnte, wich er anfänglich noch in den Funk und die lateinamerikanische Richtung aus.

But this changed abruptly when the first recordings of concerts featuring Adam Ben Ben Ezra appeared online. The first enquiries about a collaboration came from none other than Victor Wooten, Pat Metheny and Snarky Puppy. There are really fewer successful artists in this industry. By this time, Ben Ezra had already turned his back on Israel for some time and had settled in Portugal instead, where he was gripped by a wholly new creative energy (as he calls it himself). However, it was not only the newly composed material that changed his work, but also the courage to break entirely new musical ground with the double bass.

Dies änderte sich allerdings schlagartig, als erste Mitschnitte von Konzerten unter Beteiligung von Adam Ben Ezra im Netz auftauchten. Die ersten Anfragen zu einer Zusammenarbeit kamen von keinen Geringeren als Victor Wooten, Pat Metheny sowie Snarky Puppy. Da gibt es wahrlich weniger erfolgreiche Künstler in dieser Branche. Israel hatte Ezra zu jener Zeit bereits seit einiger Zeit den Rücken gekehrt und hatte sich stattdessen in Portugal niedergelassen, wo er (wie er es selbst nennt) von einer ganz neuen Schaffenskraft erfasst wurde. Es waren allerdings nicht ausschließlich das neu komponierte Material, welches sein Schaffen veränderte, sondern auch der Mut, mit dem Kontrabass ganz neue musikalische Wege zu beschreiten.

Having met the drummer Michael Olivera in Madrid, he recorded several compositions of no more than one minute in length with him. This basic recording was ‘filled out’ with synthesiser, flute and vocals. This was followed by loops and overdubs. A technique that already seems commonplace in popular music. But now it has also arrived in its best form in jazz.

Da er in Madrid den Schlagzeuger Michael Olivera kennenlernte, spielte er mit ihm mehrere Kompositionen von einer Länge von nicht mehr als einer Minute ein. Diese Basis-Aufnahmen wurden „aufgefüllt“ mit Syntheseizer, Flöte und Gesang. Erst danach folgten die Loops und Overdubs. Eine Technik, die in der populären Musik bereits alltäglich scheint. Aber nun ist sie auch in ihrer besten Form im Jazz angelangt.
