Tchenbé (hold on) - An album title and a piece of advice musically packaged in the best possible way!

Tchenbé (halte durch) – Ein Albumtitel und ein Ratschlag musikalisch bestens verpackt!

A few years have passed since the musician, composer, and producer David Kiledjian and the singer Olivya got to know each other in Lyon (France) and decided to record a couple of songs together. All the songs they produced were sung in English, which was the most surprising thing. But that was only true up to the moment when the two of them realised that it didn't sound as authentic as they had hoped. From that moment on, Olivya put her trust in the language of her native Martinique — the Creole language. Soon they were joined by Raphaël Philibert, a percussionist, saxophonist, and singer. He had already made a name for himself in Creole music.

Es sind bereits einige Jahre seit dem Moment vergangen, als sich der Musiker, Komponist und Produzent David Kiledjian und die Sängerin Olivya in Lyon (Frankreich) begegneten und sich entschlossen ein paar Songs gemeinsam einzuspielen. Das eigentlich Überraschende dabei, dass alle produzierten Stücke auf englisch gesungen wurden. Aber nur bis zu dem Moment, als wohl beide bemerkten, dass sich das alles nicht so authentisch anhört, wie man es sich erhofft hatte. Fortan vertraute Olivya der Sprache ihrer Heimat Martinique – kreolisch. Rasch stieß der Perkussionist, Saxophonist und Sänger Raphaël Philibert hinzu, der sich bereits einen gewissen Bekanntheitsgrad in Bezug auf die kreolische Musik gemacht hatte.

Once the quartet ‘Dowdelin’ was completed with the addition of drummer Greg Boudras, not much time passed before they were able to present their debut album ‘Carnaval Odyssey’ to the public. More than favourable feedback from critics and the public provided the necessary motivation to follow up with the second album ‘Lanmou Lanmou’. The enthusiasm from the press that followed could hardly be surpassed. Downlin was praised as an Afro-Creole groove machine with the guarantee of irresistible, catchy tunes. It was everything from ‘album of the month’ to ‘discovery of the year’.

Als mit dem Schlagzeuger Greg Boudras das Quartett »Dowdelin« komplettiert wurde, verging auch nicht viel Zeit, bis man das Debütalbum „Carnaval Odyssey“ der Öffentlichkeit vorstellen konnte. Die mehr als positive Resonanz seitens der Kritik und des Publikums gaben wohl die notwendige Motivation, um mit „Lanmou Lanmou“ gleich das zweite Album nachzulegen. Was folgte, war an Begeisterung seitens der Presse kaum noch zu übertreffen. Dowdelin wurde als afro-kreolische Groove-Maschine mit der Garantie für unwiderstehliche Ohrwurm-Melodien angepriesen. Vom „Album des Monats“ bis zur „Entdeckung des Jahres“ – es war alles dabei.

In their assessment, some critics even went so far as to speak of a ‘redefinition of Creole jazz culture’. Even though I too was delighted with the new influence in modern jazz, I still wondered why the reggae rhythms and sonorous drum beats were mostly fed from the synthesiser? How was the band unable to bring the lively feeling of Creole music to the stage with reduced electronics? With the album ‘Tchenbé’, this question is now a thing of the past.

Manche Kritiker gingen sogar in ihrer Einschätzung so weit, dass sie von einer „Neudefinition der kreolischen Jazz-Kultur“ sprachen. Obwohl auch ich höchst erfreut über den neuen Einfluss im modernen Jazz war, stellte sich mir dennoch die Frage, warum die Reggae-Rhythmen und sonore Drum-Beats meist aus dem Synthesizer eingespeist werden? Wieso war es der Band nicht möglich, das lebhafte Gefühl kreolischer Musik mit reduzierter Elektronik auf die Bühne zu bekommen? Diese Frage hat sich nun mit dem Album „Tchenbé“ erübrigt.

It seems that Dowdelin has not carelessly brushed aside my reservations. Now suddenly the beats sound like they do when recorded live and analogue technology has replaced the ‘artificial’ sound to my ears. One more thing I noticed? Suddenly, English and French lyrics are getting a chance again. This at least makes it easier for me to understand. When translated, the title of the album means something like ‘hang on!’ and applies (according to the band) to all phases of life. Up or down — that remains irrelevant. Literally, it reads like this: ‘We all know family members, friends, and strangers in our lives who are not doing well, for whom life has become too difficult to bear. An accident, a separation, an illness, a geopolitical conflict and everything comes to a standstill, our lives change radically.’

Dowdelin scheinen meine Vorbehalte nicht achtlos zur Seite geschoben haben. Plötzlich klingen die Beats wie sie klingen, wenn live eingespielt und analoge Technik hat den für meine Ohren „künstlichen“ Sound verdrängt. Was mir noch auffällt? Plötzlich bekommen auch wieder englische und französische Texte eine Chance. Zumindest erleichtert es das Verstehen für mich. Der Titel des Albums übersetzt bedeutet so viel wie „halte durch!“ und hat Geltung (nach Aussage der Band) für alle Phasen des Lebens. Ob hoch oder tief – das bleibt nebensächlich. Wortgetreu liest sich das so: „Wir alle kennen Familienmitglieder, Freunde und Fremde in unserem Leben, denen es nicht gut geht, für die das Leben zu schwer geworden ist, um es zu ertragen. Ein Unfall, eine Trennung, eine Krankheit, ein geopolitischer Konflikt und alles steht still, unser Leben ändert sich radikal.“

Indisputably, it appears that the music of it oscillates between the influences of tradition, jazz and popular music. However, it would be very difficult for any critic to categorise it completely in one direction. In my opinion, the album, which beautifully embeds themes such as letting go, healing, love and life as a gift in music, is a real stroke of luck. It appears that the message that ‘Tchenbé’ carries has a lot to do with the fact that the singer Olivya had to overcome a difficult human time during production.

Unbestritten hangelt sich die Musik von Dowdelin zwischen den Einflüssen von der Tradition, dem Jazz und der populären Musik. Doch vollkommen einer Richtung zuzuordnen, da würde sich wohl jeder Kritiker sehr schwer tun. Für mich ist das Album, welches Themen wie das Loslassen, die Heilung, die Liebe und das Leben als Geschenk auf wunderbare Weise in Musik einbettet, ein wahrer Glücksgriff. Wie es scheint, hat die Botschaft die „Tchenbé“ in sich trägt, nicht unwesentlich auch damit zu tun, dass die Sängerin Olivya während der Produktion eine menschlich schwere Zeit zu überstehen hatte.
