Shaun Martin – The short life of a great musician
This Jazz-Matinée starts with a tribute to Shaun Martin, keyboardist, composer, arranger, and member of Snarky Puppy, who died far too young at the age of 36. Following his graduation from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts in Dallas and his studies at the University of North Texas (where he was actually influenced by classical music and gospel), he began working with Kirk Franklin and Erykah Badu in 1990. Subsequently, Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adams and Timbaland followed. Then in 2010, he founded Snarky Puppy with a few musician friends. In total, Shaun Martin was awarded 7 Grammys for his work. Unfortunately, he suffered a very serious stroke in 2023, from which he never recovered and ultimately died on 3 August 2024.
Die heutige Jazz-Matinee startet mit dem Gedenken an den mit 36 Jahren viel zu früh verstorbenen Keyboarder, Komponisten, Arrangeur und Mitglied der Formation Snarky Puppy, Shaun Martin. Nach dem Abschluss der Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts in Dallas und dem Studium an der Univrsität von Nord-Texas (dabei eigentlich von der klassischen Musik und dem Gospel geprägt), startete er 1990 die Zusammenarbeit mit Kirk Franklin und Erykah Badu. Im Anschluss folgten Chaka Khan, Yolanda Adams und Timbaland. 2010 war es dann soweit, dass er mit ein paar befreundeten Musikern Snarky Puppy gründete. Shaun Martin wurden insgesamt 7 Grammys für sein Schaffen überreicht. Doch leider erlitt er 2023 einen sehr schweren Schlaganfall, von dem er sich nie mehr erholte und letztlich am 3. August 2024 verstarb.
Alex Koo - Blame It on My Chromosome
Already during his training as a classical pianist, the Belgian Alex Koo was regarded as a child prodigy. This is already an indication of the virtuosity and variety that the musician packs into his compositions and celebrates on the piano. Despite being stranded in jazz in the meantime, Koo's musical style cannot really be categorised. He recently said himself: ‘ The only way for a jazz musician not to fall into depression is to lose himself in the music. There has to be a meaning to music that goes beyond self-promotion. To me, it's about accepting who I am and letting go of everything else.’ The newly released album ‘Blame It On My Chromosome’ can therefore almost be described as a form of self-therapy.
Der Belgier Alex Koo wurde bereits während seiner Ausbildung zum klassischen Pianisten als Wunderkind gehandelt. Dies lässt bereits erahnen, welche Virtuosität und Vielfalt der Musiker in seine Kompositionen verpackt und am Klavier zelebriert. Obwohl inzwischen beim Jazz gestrandet, lässt sich der musikalische Stil von Koo nicht so recht einordnen. Er selbst sagte kürzlich: „Der einzige Weg, als Jazzmusiker nicht in Depressionen zu verfallen, ist, sich in der Musik zu verlieren. Musik braucht einen Sinn, der über die Selbstvermarktung hinausgeht. Für mich geht es darum, zu akzeptieren, wer ich bin, und alles andere loszulassen.“ So kann das jetzt erschienene Album „Blame It On My Chromosome“ schon beinahe als eine Form der Selbsttherapie bezeichnet werden.
Jakob Bänsch - ... and now: All The Others
German trumpeter Jakob Bänsch's second album takes us on a journey through the culture of literature and film, drawing on Maurice Ravel, among others, and giving Mephisto a completely new sound. The critics have this to say about the album and the artist: ‘Jakob Bänsch has already made a name for himself as a young artist who is breaking new ground and putting his own stamp on the music. His playing is characterised by lightness, imagination, and a high degree of care and purity of sound. The fundamental virtue of the album is that he uses the means sparingly, moderately and appropriately when expressing emotions. There are no overloaded solo parts, no unnecessary and superfluous phrases. The music flows freely, beautifully, purely and enchantingly.’
Das zweite Album des deutschen Trompeters Jakob Bänsch nimmt uns mit auf eine Reise durch die Kultur von Literatur und Film.Dabei greift er unter anderem auf Maurice Ravel zurück und lässt Mephisto in einem vollkommen neuen Klangbild erscheinen. Die Kritik wertet das Album und den Künstler so: „Jakob Bänsch hat sich bereits einen Namen als junger Künstler gemacht, der neue Wege geht und der Musik seinen eigenen Stempel aufdrückt. Sein Spiel zeichnet sich durch Leichtigkeit, Fantasie und ein hohes Maß an Sorgfalt und Reinheit des Klangs aus. Die grundlegende Tugend des Albums besteht darin, dass er bei der Darstellung von Emotionen sparsam, maßvoll und angemessen mit den Mitteln umgeht. Es gibt keine überladenen Soloparts, keine unnötigen und überflüssigen Phrasen. Die Musik fließt ungehindert, schön, rein und bezaubernd.“
Gert Kapo – Jazz-rock fusion and a touch of classical music
What makes the debut solo album ‘Amanet’ so special, however, are the traditional, almost oriental sounds from Gert Kapo's homeland - Albania. In Albanian, Amanet is a collective term for treasure, value, knowledge and wisdom, and also symbolises the cultural wealth of the region on the Mediterranean. According to Kapo, the album is his own personal Amanet and he explains it as follows: ‘To make music that is in harmony with what has been passed down to me, interpreted in the way I hear and feel it. The album is a momentary imprint of my soul, making my inner voice audible through the music’. He describes the song Tom's Broken Samba as one of the key compositions. It is dedicated to his nephew, who died very young and was particularly fond of Brazilian music.
Was allerdings dem Debüt-Solo-Album „Amanet“ seine Besonderheit verleiht, sind die traditionellen, fast schon orientalischen Klänge aus der Heimat von Gert Kapo - Albanien. Amanet, im albanischen Sprachgebrauch ein Sammelbegriff für Schatz, Wert, Wissen und Weisheit, steht auch für den kulturellen Reichtum der Region am Mittelmeer. Kapo bezeichnet das Album als sein ganz persönliches Amanet und erklärt es so: „Musik zu machen, die im Einklang mit dem steht, was mir überliefert wurde, so interpretiert, wie ich es höre und fühle. Das Album ist ein momentaner Abdruck meiner Seele, der meine innere Stimme durch die Musik hörbar macht“. Als eines der Schlüsselkompositionen bezeichnet er den Song Tom‘s Broken Samba. Er ist gewidmet seinem sehr früh verstorbenen Neffen, der die brasilianische Musik besonders gern hörte.
