How coincidences can quickly throw long-planned schedules into disarray can be seen quite easily in the list of artists taking to the matinée stage today. In fact, today's performance was originally supposed to be reserved for the band, who were planning to present their new album entitled ‘Prima die tornare a casa’. Appropriate for two reasons. One was to underline the upcoming immersion in the colours of spring with rhythmic sounds and (as the title translates as ‘Before returning home’) also to introduce the Maliki World Orchestra to a larger audience before they make themselves comfortable at home again to work on new compositions. But the idea of why not take the opportunity to invite other musicians from the field of ‘World Music’ quickly made the original plan slip under the table.
Wie Zufälle längst geplante Abläufe dann doch recht schnell durcheinanderwürfeln können, ist recht einfach an der Liste der Künstler auszumachen, die die Matinee-Bühne am heutigen Tag betreten. Ursprünglich sollte der heutige Auftritt nämlich der Formation vorbehalten sein, die ihr neues Album mit dem Titel »Prima die tornare a casa« vorzustellen gedachten. Passend aus zweierlei Gründen. Einerseits das nun anstehende Eintauchen in die Farben des Frühlings mit rhythmischen Klängen zu unterlegen und (da der Titel übersetzt »Vor der Rückkehr nach Hause« bedeutet) ganz nebenbei auch noch das Maliki World Orchestra einem größeren Publikum vorzustellen, bevor sie es sich wieder zuhause gemütlich machen, um an neuen Kompositionen zu arbeiten. Doch der Gedanke, warum nicht die Gelegenheit zu ergreifen, auch andere Musikern aus dem Bereich »Weltmusik« einzuladen, ließ das ursprüngliche Vorhaben rasch unter den Tisch gleiten.
Baba Yaga – Don't confuse it with Baba Roga or Baba Zima!
In fact, they are the figure from Slavic mythology, possibly also known to us as Baba Jaga. But here and now, the spotlight is on a music project that brings with it pretty much everything you can expect from World Music. Considering their national origins, a colourful bunch got together at the ‘Vienna Conservatory’ in 2023 and decided to reinterpret their native sounds. This musical journey takes them across the Balkans, past the Orient to Israel and back to the Alpine republic. Using the violin, a double bass, percussion, an accordion, a guitar, and the voice, they guarantee the best entertainment.
Bei denen handelt es sich nämlich um die Figur aus der slawischen Mythologie, die uns möglicherweise auch als Baba Jaga bekannt ist. Hier und heute steht aber ein Musikprojekt im Rampenlicht, welches so ziemlich alles mit sich bringt, was man von der Weltmusik erwarten kann. Ihre nationale Herkunft betrachtend, hat sich hier 2023 am „Wiener Konservatorium“ ein bunter Haufen getroffen und beschlossen, heimatliche Klänge neu zu interpretieren. Die musikalische Wanderung geht über den Balkan, schrammt am Orient vorbei nach Israel und kehrt zurück in die alpenländische Republik. Der Einsatz der Violine, einem Kontrabass, der Perkussion, einem Akkordeon, einer Gitarre und der Stimme sind der Garant für beste Unterhaltung.
Three Fall – Far, far more than an ordinary trio
Explaining their motivation with regard to the music, the guys say: ‘It's what appeals and holds the “Three Fall” world together at its core. A different sound for jazz. Newly socialised. With a fresh energy, for people who don't believe in boundaries. To play jazz as the ultimate freedom to express what you feel, think and know. No fear of tradition and convention.’ That's the best way I could have described it. As a basic instrumental line-up, they have opted for the saxophone/clarinet, the trombone and the drums. Everything else that is added to the harmonies depends on the respective guests, who the trio always invites on stage with them, and the trade press has this to say about it: ‘Innovation arises from challenge. Just three individuals in collective harmony. A magical triangle between structure and improvisation. Quite cunning and adept. Always good for a surprise. Of course, the fun doesn't have to be neglected either. Is that still jazz? Hip-hop, Rock, World Music, Reggae, Funk and Pop. - My respect!’
Die Jungs erklären ihre Motivation in Hinblick auf die Musik mit folgenden Worten: „Es ist das, was gefällt und die »Three Fall« Welt im Kern zusammenhält. Jazz klingt anders. Neu sozialisiert. Mit frischer Energie, für Menschen, die nicht an Grenzen glauben. Jazz zu spielen als die ultimative Freiheit, das auszudrücken, was man fühlt, denkt und weiß. Keine Angst vor Tradition und Konvention.“ Besser hätte ich es auch nicht beschreiben können. Als instrumentale Grundausstattung hat man sich für das Saxofon/Klarinette, die Posaune und das Schlagzeug entschieden. Was sich dann noch in die Harmonien einreiht, hängt von den jeweiligen Gästen ab, die das Trio stets mit auf die Bühne bittet.Die Fachpresse beurteilt es so: „Aus Herausforderung entsteht Innovation. Drei Individuen in kollektiver Harmonie. Ein magisches Dreieck zwischen Struktur und Improvisation. Ziemlich gerissen und versiert. Immer für eine Überraschung gut. Natürlich muss auch der Spaß nicht zu kurz kommen. Ist das noch Jazz? Hip-Hop, Rock, Weltmusik, Reggae, Funk und Pop.” - Respekt!
Michal Elia Kamal – A musical message that reaches its target.
If this is not an extraordinary way to start out in life ... Daughter of Iranian parents, born in Israel and then raised in Istanbul. This is exactly what Michal Elia Kamal's music sounds like. She combines oriental tradition with European music and harmonises it with the Hebrew language. She is known in the Middle East as the ‘Lioness of the Orient’. While physically rather small and petite, she becomes a giantess on stage. As she describes this transformation: ‘At that moment, I feel as if an older woman from the past is taking control of my body to give me this voice.’ With the experience of always being perceived as an enemy of the state in the country where she was born and brought up in the Jewish faith, she has left her mark, which she then tries to smooth over with World Music and has this formula ready: ‘You send them this musical message and it works!’
Wenn dies mal kein außergewöhnlicher Weg als Einstieg in das Leben ist ... Tochter iranischer Eltern, in Israel geboren und dann in Istanbul aufgewachsen. Und ganz genau so klingt die Musik von Michal Elia Kamal. Orientalische Tradition verbindet sich mit europäischer Musik und wird in Einklang mit der hebräischen Sprache gebracht. Im Mittleren Osten wird sie als »die Löwin des Orients« bezeichnet. Körperlich eher klein und zierlich, wird sie auf der Bühne zu einer Riesin. Sie beschreibt diese Verwandlung so: „Ich fühle mich in dem Moment so, als würde eine ältere Frau aus der Vergangenheit die Kontrolle über meinen Körper übernehmen, um mir diese Stimme zu verleihen.“ Mit der Erfahrung im Gepäck, in dem Land, in dem sie geboren wurde und im jüdischen Glauben erzogen, stets ähnlich wie ein Staatsfeind wahrgenommen zu werden, hat Spuren hinterlassen, die sie dann mit der Weltmusik zu glätten versuchte.Sie hält diese Formel bereit: „Du sendest ihnen diese musikalische Botschaft und sie wirkt!“
Mino Cinelo – Be it France or America. Rooted forever on Martinique.
He was born in Saint Cloud (a suburb of the French capital) in 1957. His interest in the guitar aroused quite early on. As time went on, however, his passion for drums and percussion prevailed. By the age of sixteen, he was already drawn to the streets of Paris, where he presented his music to find out whether his musical style was at all popular with the public. In 1979, he crossed the Atlantic for the first time, heading for the USA, where he quickly found a home in the jazz scene. He was surprised to find that he was not only accepted, but also invited into the recording studio by the cream of the crop. His first solo album was released in 1995 under the name ‘World Trio’. The exceptional artist now performs on stage with trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær.
Mino Cinelo erblickte 1957 in Saint Cloud (einem Vorort der französischen Hauptstadt) das Licht der Welt. Recht früh weckte die Gitarre sein Interesse. Allerdings überwog mit der Zeit die Leidenschaft am Schlagzeug und der Perkussion. Bereits mit sechzehn zog es ihn in die Straßen von Paris, wo er seine Musik präsentierte, um herauszufinden, ob sein musikalischer Stil beim Publikum überhaupt ankommt.1979 überquerte er dann erstmals den Atlantik mit dem Ziel USA, wo er rasch in der Jazz-Szene eine Heimat fand. Zu seiner eigenen Überraschung wurde er nicht nur akzeptiert, sondern auch von den Besten der .Besten ins Tonstudio gebeten. Sein erstes Solo-Album erschien 1995 unter dem Namen »World Trio«. Heute steht der Ausnahmekünstler mit dem Trompeter Nils Petter Molvær auf der Bühne.
Faris Amine – Emotions and feelings straight from the Sahara
When you think of or listen to the Blues, you associate it primarily with the south of the USA. But it should not be forgotten that the blues originated in West Africa. Especially in the Sahel region and the Sahara. This has long been demonstrated by members of the Tuareg and Kel Tamasheq, such as Ali Farka Toure and Tinariwen, with their music. According to Faris Amine: ‘When you go to the desert, yes, it becomes really obvious how the blues is connected to these lands, anyone who hears traditional Tuareg music will think of the blues.’ As with nearly all performers who have dedicated themselves to World Music, the origins can already be surmised in the family. His mother is from the Tuareg people, his father from Italy and grew up in France. The new album is called ‘Mississippi to Sahara’.
Wer an den Blues denkt oder ihn hört, der verbindet ihn vorrangig mit dem Süden der USA. Doch sollte nicht vergessen werden, dass der Blues seinen Ursprung in Westafrika hat. Hier insbesondere im Gebiet der Sahelzone und der Sahara. Mitglieder der Tuareg und der Kel Tamasheq, wie Ali Farka Toure oder Tinariwen, stellen dies mit ihrer Musik seit langer Zeit unter Beweis. Faris Amine sagt dazu: „Wenn man in die Wüste geht, ja, dann wird es wirklich offensichtlich, wie der Blues mit diesen Ländern verbunden ist, jeder, der traditionelle Tuareg-Musik hört, wird an den Blues denken.“ Wie bei nahezu allen Interpreten, die sich der Weltmusik verschrieben haben, sind die Ursprünge bereits in der Familie zu erahnen. The fusion of jazz and global world music seems to be a kind of natural minestrone that drives all this music forward.
Everybody here is excellent. I haven't heard of Baba Yaga (musician), but I know the Baba Zula band from Istanbul.
But my favorite is definitely Faris Amine. Outstanding Saharan blues.
