The musician Laura Misch, who lives in London, brings together two things that you might think don't really belong together at all. The biomedical scientist, who studied and still practices medicine, says she is perfect at seeing connections. She explains it as follows: “I have always found parallels between biomedicine and music, a microphone is a microscope of sound and a studio is a laboratory of distillation, producing feels like discovering, it feels like discovering in science. Sample The Sky was like a meeting of these two worlds. Studying a sample means collecting and looking deeply, while the sky symbolises our connection to nature.“
Die Londoner Musikerin Laura Misch bringt zwei Dinge unter einen Hut, bei denen man annehmen könnte, da passe eigentlich so gar nichts zusammen. Die studierte und noch immer praktizierende Biomedizinerin kann, ihrer eigenen Aussage folgend, sehr wohl Zusammenhänge erkennen. Sie erklärt es so: „Ich habe immer Parallelen zwischen Biomedizin und Musik gefunden, ein Mikrofon ist ein Mikroskop des Klangs und ein Studio ist ein Labor der Destillation, Produzieren fühlt sich an wie Entdecken, es fühlt sich an wie Entdecken in der Wissenschaft. „Sample The Sky“ war wie eine Begegnung dieser beiden Welten. Ein Sample zu studieren bedeutet, zu sammeln und tief zu schauen, während der Himmel unsere Verbindung zur Natur symbolisiert.“
Everybody can now see for themselves whether she has really succeeded by giving the album ‘Sample The Sky’, which was released by One Little Independent / Bertus Music-Label last October, a chance on the turntable. The multi-talented musician, who was born in the English capital in 1992, discovered her love of music at a young age and picked up her first instrument. And it wasn't the saxophone, as one might expect, but the violin. She became more and more interested in the saxophone when she realised that a woman could also play the instrument, leading to the solo EPs ‘Shaped By Who We Knew’, ‘Playground’ and ‘Lonely City’.
Ob ihr dies wirklich gelungen ist, darüber kann sich jeder nun selbst ein Bild machen, indem man dem Album »Sample The Sky«, das beim One Little Independent/Bertus Musikvertrieb im vergangenen Oktober erschienen ist, eine Chance auf dem Plattenteller gibt. Ihre Liebe zur Musik entdeckte das 1992 in der englischen Hauptstadt geborene Multitalent bereits in jungen Jahren und griff zu ihrem ersten Instrument. Und es war nicht, wie eigentlich anzunehmen, das Saxofon, sondern die Geige. Ihr Interesse am Saxofon wuchs allerdings in dem Augenblick, als ihr bewusst wurde, dass auch eine Frau bestens mit diesem Instrument umzugehen weiß.Im Anschluss folgten die Solo-EP‘s „Shaped By Who We Knew“, „Playground“ und „Lonely City“.
The music career of the singer and multi-instrumentalist only really took off when she came to the attention of Phill Taggart and Jamie Cullum, who spontaneously invited her to his radio event ‘The Jazz Show with Jamie Cullum’. And the next person to knock on her door and ask for a collaboration was none other than Michael Kiwanuka. This is how his single ‘Money’ came about. Since then Laura Misch can be seen and heard at various jazz festivals and concert venues in the Royale Albert Hall and is also a welcome guest on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and Jazz FM.

In the beginning, however, it didn't look like a career in music at all. With two university degrees in her pocket (media communication and biomedicine), seeking employment in these fields clearly took priority. Only when the coronavirus pandemic broke out did a slow rethink and a shift towards musical ambitions begin. As a result, ‘Sample The Sky’ is basically the artist's first work as a musician with a ‘side job’. She used samples she recorded herself directly from nature as the basis for the album, which she then incorporated into the compositions.
Doch sah es anfänglich überhaupt nicht nach einer Musikkarriere aus. Denn mit zwei Studienabschlüssen in der Tasche (Medienkommunikation und Biomedizin) hatte die Jobsuche in diesen Bereichen klar den Vorrang. Erst mit dem Ausbruch der Corona-Pandemie begann das langsame Umdenken und die Verlagerung auf die musikalischen Ambitionen. So ist „Sample The Sky“ im Grunde genommen das Erstlingswerk der Künstlerin als Musikerin mit „Nebenjob“. Als Grundlage für das Album dienten selbst aufgenommene Samples direkt aus der Natur, die sie anschließend in die Kompositionen einfließen ließ.
Nevertheless, it was quite a long way to the recording studio, as she was not pleased with the recordings. That all changed when producer William Arcane took on the matter and steered the sound in an entirely different direction by re-recording all the compositions and giving more space to the synthetic sound. As in their live performances, Marysia Osu on harp and Tomáš Kašpar on guitar were also present in the studio. In order to finish with distillation in the broadest sense, I would rather not withhold the essence of the music review, which in words sounds like this: ‘The album responds to the patterns of nature with organic electronic production, embodied lyrics, wind-inspired saxophone sounds and unique vocals.’
Bis ins Aufnahmestudio war es dennoch ein recht langer Weg, da sie mit den Einspielungen nicht so richtig anfreunden konnte. Dies änderte sich, als der Produzent William Arcane sich der Sache annahm und den Sound in eine völlig andere Richtung lenkte, indem er alle Kompositionen neu einspielen ließ und dabei dem Synthetischen Klang mehr Raum gewährte. Wie bei ihren Live-Auftritten, waren auch im Studio mit dabei, Marysia Osu an der Harfe und Tomáš Kašpar an der Gitarre. Um dann auch wieder mit der Destillation im weitesten Sinne abzuschließen, will ich nicht die daraus gewonnene Essenz der Musikkritik Vorenthalten, die sich in Worten formuliert so anhört: „Das Album reagiert auf die Muster der Natur mit organischer elektronischer Produktion, verkörperten Texten, vom Wind inspirierten Saxophonklängen und einzigartigem Gesang.“

Laura Misch's music is amazing. I had heard a song by Tom Misch called Follow, where the Misch brothers are an ardent duo. This song is excellent, with elegant arrangements. Now I'm going to look for Laura's albums. Thanks for this information about good music.
