Unfortunately, what it means to help has been distorted in the minds of many human beings. It is common that as soon as we hear that word, money immediately comes to mind. And it seems that in this life everything is managed with money. However, I differ a lot from that way of thinking because helping implies giving assistance to a person when he/she needs it and that assistance can be a good word, company or simply an ear willing to listen with empathy.
Thinking that help always has to do with something material, many refrain from giving support because they do not have money or something to share and unfortunately when opportunities arise to assist someone in need we may refuse right away because it is already pre-established in our brains that we must have money.
In these times in which stress has stolen the limelight of our lives, everyone is immersed in their own affairs and this is another factor that can prevent us from having the nice privilege of giving a helping hand. It is really nice to feel the satisfaction of taking a little bit of time out of our busy lives to help someone else.
I understand that it is not easy but it is worth the effort. I always try to solve my problems myself, however, there are times when I need someone to listen to me, just to listen to me and there has been a good friend to do it, that great friend is my dad. Maybe many people think that because he is my dad he should always be there but he also has things to take care of but every time he can he takes the time to listen to me and give me good advice and believe it or not, I have also been able to advise him when he has needed it.
There have been situations in which other people outside my family circle have reached out to me and it is not that I always need to be listened to, no, they have helped me in other ways. I mention all this because when we think carefully we will realize how good it feels to have someone care about you, especially at times when life turns gray, and it is good to remember that so we can be ready to do so when someone needs us.
The world goes round and round, so we will not always need to be helped but there will be times when we are the ones who have the privilege to do it, the point is, will we? If we modify the concept that helping is giving money, we will be more ready to do it and I know that if we cultivate empathy we will do everything in our power so that a person who is having a hard time can feel assisted and regain joy. It is nice to remember that we can be a comforting balm for someone.

It’s really nice to hear that your dad is always there to help you and listen to you. That’s one luxury you have there. And you’re right, sometimes all someone needs is a listening ear.
