I have always lived a minimalist lifestyle since I started to earn money, I focus on buying the things I need rather than my wants because as humans our urge for new things is insatiable and could lead us to make financial mistakes.
One of the advantages of technology is that it makes life better and easier. Still, it comes with a cost, every time a new stuff is made, people always dream of owning it, a good example is the iPhone, every year they release a new brand. People change to whichever brand is the latest because they have the money. At the same time, we also have people who do not have the money but will do anything possible to get it to satisfy their urge and impress others that they are using the latest thing.
A minimalist is someone who focuses on his needs and not wants, I have been using my Android for the past 5 years and still do not see a need to change it yet because it is still serving me well, and I cherish my old things.
Simplicity is a good way to live life but we should not take our minimalist lifestyle to the extreme by starving or depriving ourselves of the basic things in life.
I knew a street brother who took his minimalism to the extreme, it was many years ago and I was still living with my parent, this bro was someone that we used to play football together and it was a small community so we all knew each other houses and also relate outside the football field.
It was a rural area and the jobs that were common there was bricklaying and laborers job, this bro would work and instead of buying good food to give him strength and nourish his body, he would buy Garri, his friends would mock him saying he wants to take all the money he is earning to heaven but he just doesn't care.
Till now, I do not understand why he lives such a lifestyle and I left the town years ago too so I do not know how he is fairing now... What I think is that he is probably saving for future purposes, I have learned not to judge people without hearing their side of the story but still, I feel that treating ourselves to a good meal is an important thing to do.

How are you still using your android of 5 years? I bought my Samsung in 2022 and it's already showing signs of spoilage lol.
lol, I guess we know how to use phones more than each other... I bought my Redmi note 9 pro in 2018 and it is still working fine till now...
Omo, That's true though. I attribute this to my Samsung getting very hot on every slightest provocation.
if it didn't fall from your hand, it is not your fault that it developed a fault, the phone is not just strong enough to handle the task you are doing with it.
I don't think it's even always the case of upgrading their phones because they have the money. I know several people who go without or waste money that could be much better used in other areas of life just so they can say they have the latest iPhone. Seems odd to me.
Yea some people struggle to save that money they are wasting on the latest trend... They are suffering from peer pressure...

The most important thing is to strike a balance at some point. Ofcos everyone wants good things but that doesn't mean they should keep buying new gadgets whenever a new one is released. I've used my phone for over 4 years now, I need an upgrade because of space. In this case it's a need and not just a want for the sake of buying a new phone.
yea your case is because you need it... which is justified ..
Some people will insult you for using the same phone for five years but it’s still working well and that’s because you know how to maintain the things you have
insult me ke, I don't fall for peer pressure...
As humans, we have endless desires which will never end. If we want to satisfy our desire we may end up being broke. That's why we need to focus on what we need, not what we want.
