I think a lot of us learn to stop being people pleasers at some point. I had a similar experience and worst they will still act like you have done nothing for them even if they can never do much for you.
Right from time , i dont lend peeople any amount of money i know i can let go and this saves me alot of disappointment in people.
I learnt this later in life and I am glad that I did, only God knows how many bad debts I would have incurred.
