Really relate to the wedding story there - I'm personally terrified of when my own friends decide to get married. Can't deal with all the fussiness and pointless spending. Gotta hope we argue before that :))
I think you're right - the people who are negatively affected by your choices aren't meant to be there. Why would a true friend/lover stand in the way of you simplifying your life and making it better?
When my friends decide to get married, I make it a point to remind of my preferences when it comes to spending. That way, they don't get angry that I refused their offer to break a bank because of their ceremony.
As for the lover, everyone knows what they want. I didn't crucify him because of his choice, I just quietly left because my life is mine, and being committed to someone that thinks in an entirely different way will hurt me too much.
