Fusspots And The Likes

Reading the #KISS Blog Topics for the week, and others' entries too. I’ve seen that there are just so many views to share. And truly, you can’t go around each day, be part of a family, be part of a friend group or an organisation and you wouldn’t notice these things that happen every day in our society. But I'll mention a few.

Burials

This was the first thing that came to mind as soon as I saw the prompt and before my head is offered on a platter for trying to supposedly dictate how people should honour their dead loved ones, I’ll just say that I have no judgements and I have no objections in honouring a loved one the way you see fit. But the effects of these burials, especially in my society aren’t always felt by just the people throwing them. First, it was the addition of the word, “Ceremony,” to burials, making it a burial ceremony.

Now, I grew up hearing just burial. But with the addition of this word to it, people have gone to all manner of ridiculous lengths trying to surpass each other on who threw a better burial. Even though I could never be in support of lavish weddings, it at least sounds less weird than saying you want to throw a lavish burial. I don’t get it. The sad part is that most of these people who claim to want to give the biggest honour to their dead relatives never did it when they were living.

There was this family friend that as long as I could remember was constantly imploring people to beg her only son to come take care of her. That she was suffering and that her son had completely abandoned her and never thought to call, let alone visit her. Last year, she passed away, out of heartbreak or despair or depression, I wouldn’t know. But soon enough, the neglectful son came back from his wanderings, quite well to do actually, and began ordering that cows be slaughtered, a casket made of gold be ordered and a one-week feast should be done in her honour.

I was astounded. Honour?? That was never shown when she was alive? I doubted that poor lady had eaten a full piece of chicken when she was alive and now her son intended slaughtering cows in her honour when she was gone. It’s so messed up. And sadly, it’s so rampant. People competing on whose burial celebration drew the biggest crowd or was the talk of the city.

Education

Another in this list is education. I do know that people should give their kids the best education they can afford but I feel the concept of education is ridiculously fussed about. I’ll take this concept from two perspectives. First is the choice of school. Everyone wants what’s best for their kids but I’ve seen parents incur a lot of debt because a neighbour or a friend sent their child to this expensive school and then they get insecure and break their backs, borrow, take loans with terrible interest rates just cause they want to meet some vain standard. And for what?

The next part is career choice. I don’t know if it’s as prominent as before but I still see a lot of families put so much pressure on their children to be lawyers and doctors and engineers. And even though, there’s not as much money in those careers as before, they believe the prestige in those careers precedes anything. So, there’s so much fuss where careers are concerned. You could mention that you’re a Food Technologist and get the stink eye that clearly says, “So, in essence, you cook?” It’s terrible.

Trendzzzz

I’d like to add one more which is Trending items. Phones, clothes, and accessories, to mention a few. I, for one couldn’t be caught dead with whatever is claimed to be in vogue. Most times I only ever fancy an item when it’s no more in style and is considered completely outdated. I don’t see the attraction in walking on a street and you can see at least ten people wearing exactly what you have on. And as for phones, I can’t even begin to explain how amusing I find the fuss for the latest iPhones. Selling an arm to get the iPhone 13 and before you blink, the iPhone 17 is out and since you don’t want to be seen as being behind the times, you sell another arm. How ludicrous is that?

Do I think there’s hope that people will ever have a different mindset about these things? No. I have no faith whatsoever that people would suddenly have, not even a minimalist view this time, but just a logical view. But it doesn’t change how unnecessary it is to me. But maybe people can see things better in the long run. I wouldn’t bet money on it though.

So, this is my contribution to The #KISS Topics on the things people fuss over that could be done more simply.

You hit the nail on the head with these points, especially about burial expenses. It's one concept that irks me.

I only ever fancy an item when it’s no more in style and is considered completely outdated.

I'm the same.

I enjoyed it 😉 Thanks for your #KISS

Yes, all is well so far:)

That's great. Finishing up the chores I set for the day. Weather is quite gloomy so I have an excuse to stay indoors. Hehe

It has brightened up here, so I'll head out for a walk soon:)

error comment so quick edit.
Have a nice day:)

Hehe. You too.✨

The first thing that actually popped into my head was on education.
I'm still reeling from the aftereffects of having to pay tuition for a sibling because of an unplanned increase of tuition fee.

It's terrible the way tuition fees are
constantly on the rise and being a guardian must be really trying.

This post is a VIBE— a huge YESSSS to all of this!

The sad part is that most of these people who claim to want to give the biggest honour to their dead relatives never did it when they were living.

A big to-do is not a significant part of the culture here, although people do go into debt to provide a memorial and suitable coffin... The average coffin here is something like 10k, feels like exploitation. The neglect is sadly universal I think 😞

I've learned a lot about the ceremonies in other cultures here... the theme of celebrating a family member lavishly who was not celebrated in life seems to be a common theme. That just kills me 😭 the elderly are such gems, and I despise how the world tosses them aside no matter the location!!

I also could not agree more on the education and style points. Give me an outdated phone that's cheap but functional, and a baggie hoodie all day !LOLZ 😂! Thanks for the great read 💚 !LUV !PIZZA

Yeah, I think the elderlies are extremely lovely people and I don't see any reason why they have to be neglected. It's something that evokes so much sadness in me.
The burials are just not worth it and for education, it's something that you can't just interfere.

Give me an outdated phone that's cheap but functional, and a baggie hoodie all day

Preach!!😂😂 Emphasis on the baggie hoodie. Lots of !luv to you as well sweetie.🌺🤗

Perhaps I'll write a will to have a simple burial whether or not I have children that took care of me while alive. It's sad to see children feed strangers when the parent could be fed while alive.

To me, guide the child to see, explore and make an informed decision of the career path

Perhaps I'll write a will to have a simple burial

Lol. Do you think you can actually do that, James?

I believe so

Burials

It's a sentimental things but you are logic about it. I agree with you in this cases. But I am sure if you speak about it then the world will be hell for you. I hope you understand why I am saying it.

Education is also became expensive. Sometimes I feel we can do business and shine in life which we use for educational expenses.

Yeah, I can just air my views about it but I doubt it will make much difference changing everyone's views. I'll just do my own thing.

It is crazy how some parents go through that length. I know I very parent want their children's school to be a safe place with good building and all but... They forget that's not all to it.

They just want to feel among which is... Well. They know.

Hello dearest Dreemer, I hope you are doing well. Happ Thursday, I hope you are ready for pypt. I waltzed in from #dreemport for I am an amazing #dreemer. An awesomely made #dreemerforlife.

That's not all to it. You're definitely right. ✨

Thanks for sharing dearest Dreemer ☺️.

The example given in the case of burial reminds me of a film called "died wretched". The man died wretched but was buried in an expensive casket. People do that just to make name and even make money too in the process .
As for phones and other luxuries of life, people are ready to go into debt just to acquire them. May God help us. Weldone dear.

#dreemerforlife

I expressly believe that people would come to understand these things sooner or later. Thanks for your kind words.

I, for one couldn’t be caught dead with whatever is claimed to be in vogue.

Exactly, what's the fun in wearing or using what everyone is using. I don't enjoy joining the trend, I like to stick out. They are a lot of people who just for the sake of being"trendy" do things that won't let them sleep at night or have peace of mind.

#dreemerforlife.

Exactly. There's barely any peace of mind that comes with following trends and I'm not about to rid myself of something as vital as peace.😁

Very important, I can't lose my peace just to fit in😌

Now, I grew up hearing just burial. But with the addition of this word to it, people have gone to all manner of ridiculous lengths trying to surpass each other on who threw a better burial.

This practice has really got to stop.

#dreemerforlife

Yeah, totally uncalled for practice.

Very uncalled for, instead of people grieving in peace, they then have think of the funds needed to throw those ceremonies.

You said it all, The trends are so common in my community, I remember how Blackberry was in vogue and many people could do anything just to "ping. Haha, now it's iPhone madness here and there, well... It's their cup of tea.

#dreemport

I can't agree with you less with everything you have said. My mom is from southern part of Nigeria, when her mom died, you need to see the list her uncles that never cared about her mom when she was alive gave to my mom. All in the name of they needed to honor their sister. It was really annoying, because they didn't do anything meaningful with the money other than drinking and eating .

About school fees, come to Abuja, you will see and hear nonsense. Most of this parents just want to brag about the amount they pay, it's mostly not about the children. Nice write up👍

#dreemerforlife

Reading through I remember when our teacher asked what our future ambition was and literally half of the class wanted to be a medical Doctor. when we were asked reason for choosing that profession our teacher discovered that we had been brainwashed that Doctors are the richest 🤣😂
a lot of children need proper guidance on career path so do parents. Every career is important and has its prestigious value so why fuss about one over another??
Nice post @jhymi

I like the way you think for a reason :) I couldn't agree more! 😆

But seriously... if you read this you notice immediately that the show is mostly about making the people throwing or paying for it look "good". Not about those it is supposed to actually be about.

Enough said.

Happy end of the weekend, beautiful soul <3
