These days studying is no longer just the act of learning something new. Take a look at the content circulating online when it comes to studying, there’s a certain aesthetic on its own and once again, involves consumerism. In fact, some might argue that minimalism can’t be applied to studying and its aesthetic due to its nature requiring different types of supplies and studying influencers out there are always trying to get you into the trendiest supply. But is it really the case?
What I am sharing here is mostly anecdotal as it’s always relies heavily on my personal account having this lifestyle and trying to find intersection & integration to everything else I love. So, welcome to another blog of my minimemo.

With studying, there are some areas where we as student tend to hoard, from supplies to even supplemental materials that perhaps we’re never going to even check. What’s the point of hoarding supplies and even materials that we’ll never even use?
For as long as I remember, my approach to studying has been coming from a hoarder’s perspective. I think that the more I have the better it will be. That can be said with the materials where I’d collect too many that I didn’t really ended up checking them out and they can be pretty pointless. I’ve changed my ways ever since I adopted this lifestyle almost a couple years ago.
Instead of hoarding too many materials that I might not need, I am going through each of them and only take something else when I finish it. As much as it is taking my time as sometimes I didn’t really get what I was looking for, in the process I also learn a lot of new things.
When it comes to studying supplies, guilty as charged that I used to have a problem. I can’t say no to cute stationeries and notebook. However, ever since I adopted this lifestyle, I’ve stuck to only a few notebook that are almost like a saga of how my life was journaled from the moment I started this lifestyle to today. For my studying notes, instead of buying individual books for different subjects as we’re often told growing up at schools, I simply use binders.

I know, we’re all about digital life and what not, but the thing is I still love good old fashioned notes as I find that concept stuck to me the most that way. It’s 2025 and yes we still need pen and paper. In the past though, I was that kind of person who purchased stationery just because and now, I’ve taken a lot more mindful approach to it and only buy supplies when I truly ran out of it.
These days with the world trying to get us buy the trendiest supply or even upgrading to the latest tech for studying, I can’t fault anyone for not getting tempted to purchase and consume. But being more mindful about the things we purchase, the materials we carefully choose are a lot better in long term. Personally for me, it’s the visual clutter that has helped as well as just ensuring that I get the best out of something that I am currently studying for.
See you next week in another minimemo.
Minimemo is a serialized blog that will be published every Friday in which I’ll talk about my minimalism journey, learning and experiences co-existing with a hoarder. If you want to follow that adventure, stay tuned every Friday!

My best friend and I used to be stationery hoarders. We loved the cutest things, and our desks were always a pretty postcard picture. However, these days I only stick to the basics. I'm currently doing an online course, and getting some highlighters would be beneficial since I like to have pointers highlighted and I'm old-schooled and like to handwrite my notes.
I do agree that a lot of courses online are all highly marketed and I've found myself feeling like I've been conned for what the content includes:)
Tell me about it! hahaha I love those cute stuff but I am doing better now by just using what I really need. Getting a quality content for a course is definitely a challenge considering almost everything these days can be found online.
It happens to me that with so much digitalisation I sometimes go days without writing by hand. I feel that my handwriting has become a bit distorted. I'll keep an eye out for your next minimemo.👌
😄 me tooo! my handwriting is already ugly and now with me rarely writing anything, it's a lot more challenging to read.
I actually loved binders notebook than individual note books because it helps keeps my notes together. And yes we will always be attracted to fancy and beautiful items but sticking to our needs would help us stay minimal in spending.
Yep, that's always the perk of being minimal and going minimal.
🌝❤❤
