Sanctuaries

I believe that finding joy in the things that we do, that we are, that we have, should be one of the fundamental aspirations of life. Many of us believe that joy comes to us only with extraordinary events, scarce and that can have a high cost:
_I am only joyful on weekends -a friend always tells me, as if she has a way of keeping her Monday-Friday joy at bay, guarded.
Likewise, I know many people who assume joy as a youthful, immature, superficial feeling: as if as we mature we have to lose that feeling that makes us smile:
_She keeps laughing: she hasn't lived anything yet. -They comment as if the years bring bitterness.

But joy is simpler and should be timeless. We do not have to stop being joyful just because we are old and elderly: joy cannot be exclusive to children and young people; nor should we wait for big events like winning the lottery to happen to us in order to be joyful: there are many small things that happen to us daily that can give us the feeling of pleasure, wellbeing and tranquility that we all want and need.

Personally, there are many things that bring me a lot of joy, like eating a delicious meal, drinking a cold beer, reading a good book, writing, drawing, being with my friends, having time for myself, sleeping, dancing, listening to music, watching a good movie, being with my family, receiving a tight hug from a loved one, falling in love, getting dressed up, dressing up for a special occasion, receiving and giving gifts, seeing a sunrise, a sunset, making people laugh, listening to a child's laughter. Anyway, I think at this moment joy is multiplied in the things that I see, that I have and that I do, but I will try to take three things that make my heart happy.

Perhaps because of my profession as a teacher or because I am a pure Sagittarian, I like to motivate people. Seeing that people get excited about my words, that they are moved, gives me a lot of joy. Being able to transmit positive energy is one of the most satisfying experiences a human being can have. It's normal for me to motivate my students, but to do it with friends or strangers, it's really moving.

_I needed to talk to you. Thank you," they say, and that touches me enormously.

Another thing that makes my skin crawl is listening to the sea, standing in front of it, breathing deeply and listening to the sound of the waves, it is an experience that overwhelms me. Maybe it is because I live in a city where the Caribbean Sea looks at us if we look at the horizon or maybe in other lives I was an abyssal fish, a fugitive, an antiquarian of solitude who knows the language of the blues. I do not go to the sea to bathe, I go to see it, to listen to it. Because the murmur of the waves, the stillness of the birds in full flight, make my heart sparkle.

One of the things I did as a child and still do today is draw. I write literature, but writing can sometimes exhaust me, but painting does not. Drawing has no rules or limits. The colors fly, make, draw lines, good or bad, it doesn't matter, because it is one of the acts of freedom that I allow myself and where no one has an opinion. I don't draw for others, I draw for me, to release stress and to be a child again.

I once read a legend that we were all once trees, small, large, stunted, leafy, green and dry. Surely, if I was a tree, my branches were sanctuaries for the songbirds that proclaimed joy. And I believe that joys are not unique, but they are always repeated.

Thank you very much for your support, friends. Many blessings and successes
Sometimes we put happiness at the top of the ladder and only reach it when we graduate, when we get married, when we start a family, when we get a great job. But joy is in the small, everyday, insignificant things, so insignificant at first glance. Those little things, like breathing, observing, tasting, are the details that fill our lives with color.
