Genuine Necessity

"Habit, if not resisted, soon becomes necessity." - Saint Augustine

For the past few months, I've been pondering my priorities and reassessing; my goals, priorities, and "work-life balance" as they say. However, I haven't made much progress, and I am still miles away from concluding.

Yet, as I keep on wondering and pondering, I have realized a thing or two. I've pinpointed a few things that aren't as necessary as I once thought they were, and some truly necessary things, that I have been ignoring for way too long; for which now it has all come back as a bigger problem and is now haunting me.

I was in this illusion for a while, where I got habituated to certain things that I felt were necessary, but they weren't even close to the list of necessities the average person has or should have. It was an unnecessary habit that I had duped myself into believing was necessary. And maybe it was necessary to an extent, but I had gone a bit overboard.

After a year of many ups and downs, I've realized that there's no alternative to good health, family, and purposeful work. Everything else is vague and short-lived. Your health will take you far, and a loving family will be there to assist you in that journey, purposeful work will make the challenges and daily difficulties feel minuscule.

When your life has purpose, you wake up every day with a smile and an unequaled level of energy to take on the world. A few hobbies to keep things interesting, a few different endeavors and experiences so that you live life to the fullest. And during old age, when lying on your death bed, you know that you tried your best to take in life's offerings, and you weren't barred in any way; not by people's thoughts and comments, by the circumstances, and the cards that were dealt to you.

Over the past two years, I've shifted my focus to many different aspects and tried to test my limits. Whether it be work or hobbies, now it was the wrong decision. One person can only focus on one thing at a time. Multi-tasking isn't for the average human being. It only ruins the quality of work and shifts focus from what's important, to what seems interesting and fun. But interest and the fun factor fade quickly. What survives in the long run is concentrated work and slow and steady development.

Soon enough, I'll be cutting off weak links and activities and will start focusing on the things that are purposeful to me and bring me peace and joy; while also investing in the things that benefit these activities and endeavors. I can't get distracted again, and let others dictate my life and goals.

Sometimes, it is hard to choose or prioritize things. For someone like me who thinks every single thing is important, it is very hard to recognize which of them are truly genuine and which are not. But hopefully, i will get there.

Love your post.✨

I hope and believe we all will get there, just a matter of time. 🙏

Yes when your life has a purpose and achievable goals you don't wake up confused because you know exactly what to do every morning.

And since there is less confusion, we are more focused, and that leads to better results.

Hey there!

When your life has purpose, you wake up every day with a smile and an unequaled level of energy to take on the world.

You're spot on here.

Sometimes life throws curveballs and it takes us a little longer to get back on track, but keep persevering:)

Hey, Milly, how've you been? I've been away for a while, especially from the things that I love doing. And it has left me dry. I barely have any motivation or energy left, but I still go on every day with what I have. Yet, soon I'll be reassessing all my tasks, priorities, and responsibilities. I can't live like this anymore, with 0 purpose and no results at the end of the day either.

It's necessary to identify our priorities in life, the things that are so important to our existence. Misplaced priorities is one of the biggest hinderers of progress. You work all your life only to find out at the end you've been after shadows. So I think you've taken the right step to set down your priorities and face them. That way you're likely to have no regrets at the end of it all.

Thanks for your insightful thoughts. Have a great week.

I'll be taking my time, starting next year. 2023 to 2024 has been quite a journey; one that has taken a toll on my mental and physical health. I've learned a few things along the way, and now it's time to reassess and prioritize properly.

Man, this resonated pretty hard with where I am right now. I'm working a full-time job, trying to be a better husband and father (2 teens and a 16-monthold), and attending online college for a business administration degree. With all this, I've really been thinking a lot about my priorities, and considering getting rid of my PC and going back to just my laptop. Life was simpler when that was all I had. I read more. I "practiced the art (of doing nothing" more. I generally felt less anxious about things. It's still a debate within me on a regular basis, but I feel like I'm just delaying the inevitable and that eventually I will do exactly what I keep thinking of.

As for the "genuine necessity" of things, I think there's room for some extras, but that's a separate discussion and everyone will have their own opinions about that anyway.

Keep on grinding, bro! Just make sure you don't push yourself too hard. We are humans, and we are flawed. We're not designed to perform like machines, and not all of us are built the same way; our limits differ. It's better not to work so hard that we reach our breaking point; a point of no return or recovery.

Thanks, I'm doing what I can. I had actually taken a few months off from school when my baby was born since I had gotten a title and pay change at work. I felt I was set up and I didn't feel the need to keep working on it, but the degree would mean I could get better results if I decided to change fields in the future.

Ace that degree, man! If that's what you want and need, then that's the way. Only we know what our hearts truly want, we can't let others dictate our lives.
