A Lipgloss Here, A Shiny Bronzer There || Shopping Spree or Excesses ?

in The MINIMALIST3 days ago (edited)

When it comes to controlling excesses, it’s almost as if my brain hits “sleep mode” whenever I’m buying makeup products. I am not a makeup artist but if I could, I’d own every makeup product I lay my hands on.

I find a lip-gloss that’s shiny, do I need it? No. Will I buy it? Absolutely. That video mentions how good that one setting spray is and there I go, off to get it. Funny enough, I don’t like to order makeup products online. I don’t have anything against ordering things online but personally, I’ve never actually gone online to buy makeup products. I think it’s majorly because I tell myself, “I’ll be able to control my spending and only buy things I need if I go to a physical store”. But forget it, it’s a repeated lie I tell myself yet, I refuse to learn from my past mistakes.

When I go to a cosmetic store, oh my God, every product screams “buy me please”. Makeup brands are really way up there when it comes to packaging. Even the most mundane makeup product that you probably do not even need in your routine will look so appealing just because they’ve hacked the audience’s desire. The need for shiny, sparkly and most magical looking product. Because, who wouldn’t like an eyeshadow palette that comes in a translucent seashell packaging.

Now, most of the time, I don’t have the money to afford those. As my mum would say, "makeup brands no longer sell makeup, all they sell is name and packaging". Lol. True mother, true.

The social media validation from owning a Fenty or Rare beauty product is real! Make one video tutorial using these products and all of a sudden, you have a hundred more followers. It’s almost as if people (other girls) live vicariously through these social media influencers. And I say that in good heart, what they do is amazing.

But let’s be real (even if I don’t want to be real, my account balance never fails to remind me), each time I go makeup shopping, I can’t afford those products. Instead, I splurge on the drugstore makeup products that never fail me.

I wish I had written this article just a month ago because not until recent did I do a product declutter of my makeup box. I had so many dried eyeliner gel, overused brushes and that one concealer I bought six years ago (truth be told, that concealer is the best I’ve ever used, yet I can’t find it in the market anymore. Not even online, yes, I checked) and my unending cases of lip-glosses including the ones that have not even a single drop left in them and the ones whose color contrasts my skin it almost feel as if it’s fighting my competition.

During this declutter, I dispose of the old and expired products, the empty cases and then gave away some of the lipsticks I didn’t use more than once. Because why did I convince myself purple lipstick will not paint the picture of a clown on me, lol. Luckily, my sister is a professional makeup artist and will have better use for this products than me. However, will the money come back to me? No.

When shopping for makeup products, unlike normal people, I don’t shop for a particular product or brand or the mere satisfaction that comes from finding a foundation that matches your exact shade. Nope. It’s almost as if someone closes my eyes or like I mentioned earlier, my brain goes on sleep mode. I always try to buy everything that catches my attention until my money finishes. Either I need it or not, I somehow convince myself I’ll find a use for it. Some, I do. Most, I don’t.

The one method I have tried to employ now is limiting the amount of money in my account before going to the market for my makeup spree. I transfer the money to a savings account and then keep the exact amount I wish to spend in the market in the account I use for buying things. At least, I know that regardless of how much a product appeals to me, I can’t be desperate enough to move money out of my savings. When it’s not a life or death situation.

That is shamefully, the only control technique I have against my products shopping excesses.

Lip glosses used to mistify me too, for some reason. How you could just sort of...buy one. And another. And another. It's not like, say, mascara where you know you have one or an eyeliner where you have that shade and you're done. Lip stuff is endless, isn't it? :D Gotta say, your stash looks perfectably respectable in my opinion :)

Yesssss! Oh finally! Someone that gets it! 😂😍
Thank you!

I don’t know how to do my make up but one time i wanted to learn, I realized how expensive these make up items are. So for you to be a lover of it. You are really spending.

Not all are so expensive 🤣
You can get some drug-store products that are pretty amazing too.

Your mom is so right. You get a whole makeup kit for a huge price only to open it and you find lipgloss and some small mirror. The rest is just empty box and cushion.
I hope the method you’ve employed is working. But wait, can there ever be enough lipgloss?

Emphasis on the mirror! What is it with big makeup brands and fancifying mirrors? 😂
Rightttt 🥺 CAN THERE EVER BE ENOUGH LIPGLOSS? ha ha
Wishing you a day as lovely as you are.
